Father kicked to death in street by teen gang

FOUR teenagers were being questioned by police yesterday after a father of three was beaten to death outside a pizza restaurant.

Witnesses said that the man, named as Muglin Southerman, 43, a kitchen fitter, from Rochdale, Greater Manchester, was dragged from Prima Pizza in Failsworth and attacked after refusing to give a group of youths a light.

When he told them to leave the premises they began kicking him and he fell. One witness said: “They dragged him out of the shop and knocked him to the ground and started kicking him and jumping on his head. All of them were kicking him.” The assault ended when several men came out of a nearby public house and chased the gang of youths down the street.

Mr Southerman was taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital soon after the attack, which happened around midnight, but died three hours later.

Chief Superintendent Keith Bentley described the incident as a vicious assault.

Detectives were questioning four teenagers yesterday: two girls aged 14 and 15, a boy aged 15 and a youth aged 18.
