Animal-rights injunction sought

DHL, the delivery company, is seeking a High Court injunction to prevent animal-rights activists from intimidating its staff. It says that they have been subjected to “at best unlawful harassment and at worst criminal behaviour”, citing vandalised cars, abuse screamed at workers and a director visited at home and sent threatening e-mails.

In their campaign, dubbed “Gateway to Hell”, protesters are selecting airports and ports that import animals for testing, and delivery firms that work for animal-research companies or their clients. DHL is on a hitlist belonging to Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC), of companies that have links with Huntingdon Life Sciences, Britain’s largest animal testing laboratory. Police sources say that the campaign is being run by the same activists as SHAC.

DHL is seeking a court order against both organisations, plus SHAC’s founders — Greg Avery, his wife, Natasha, and Heather James, his former wife — the Animal Liberation Front, the Animal Rights Militia, Keith Mann, who is a veteran protester, and two other animal welfare groups.
