Mayor blames rap for deaths

RAP stars who glamorise violence are promoting the use of weapons and the consequent deaths of children on the streets, Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London, said yesterday.

At the launch of Calling the Shots, a campaign to educate children about the dangers of guns, he singled out the rap collective So Solid Crew. He said: “Gun crime, knife crime — they are the only crime categories that continue to rise. With role models like So Solid Crew, there is almost an inevitability about that and people in the public eye should consider the role models they set.”

Last week Carl Morgan, a member of So Solid Crew, was jailed for 30 years for the murder of a man who failed to show him “respect”.

The mayor’s comments also come amid growing concern among senior officers that black children are carrying guns at an even younger age. Calling the Shots multimedia packs have been sent to more than 300 secondary schools in London.
