All change for London train tickets

Pricing for single and return mainline rail tickets within London are to be based on the same familiar zones used for Underground and Travelcard tickets.

The simplified fares structure, to be introduced in January, will help to pave the way for Oyster pay-as-you-go smart ticketing, already in use on the Tube.

There are more than 330 railway stations within the Travelcard zones and at present each of 97,300 station-to-station combinations has its own fares. These will be replaced by 21 zone-to-zone combinations, with a single, return and cheap day return for each.

Anthony Smith, of Passenger Focus, the traveller watchdog, said: “This will make using the railways and travelling around London easier. However, the new fares mean that some passengers will face fare increases, with significant rises in some cases. We will monitor whether the benefits of simplification outweigh these rises.”
