Ex-PM's son is driving trains

LONDON A son of the former Prime Minister Harold Wilson has given up his teaching job to become a train driver.

South West Trains has confirmed that Giles Wilson, 58, is one of its drivers.

He is understood to operate trains between London Waterloo and Guildford in Surrey.

Mr Wilson is a keen fan of the railways. “Everyone was a bit surprised that he should take up driving trains as a career,” a family friend told the Daily Mail yesterday.

“It is one thing loving the world of railways but quite another actually to work for a rail company. But he seems to be very happy with it.”

The newspaper quoted Mr Wilson as saying: “I do work on the trains. I have a place in the West Country and a flat in London, and that’s all I’m prepared to say.”

Mr Wilson is one of two sons born to the Labour leader and his wife, Mary. Harold Wilson was Prime Minister from 1964 to 1970 and from 1974 to 1976. He died in 1995.
