First-class day for royal memories

TEN special edition first-class stamps to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Coronation will be issued next week.

Five colour stamps show the pomp and ceremony of Coronation day, Tuesday June 2, 1953, including images of the Queen in full regalia with her orb and sceptre, and the procession through London.

The other five images, in black and white, portray the public events which took place half a century ago, including schoolchildren celebrating and street parties in London’s East End.

The new stamps will also be available alongside a reissue of stamps from the Coronation in a commemorative 24-page book telling the story of the day.

Gavin Macrae, Royal Mail’s director of stamps and collectibles, said: “The Coronation of Her Majesty the Queen was a truly unforgettable event that was celebrated across Britain and around the world. Whether you were one of the 20 million people sitting around just two million televisions, or if you were at a street party like the children featured on the stamps, we hope this issue will bring back special memories.”

A new portrait of the Queen adorns a single stamp to be issued on June 2 by ten United Kingdom Overseas Territories, to mark the anniversary of the Coronation.

It is the first time for 20 years that a new head of the Queen has been seen on a postage stamp. The stamps will be available from the Post Office from June 2.
