2 for 1 tickets to Singin' In The Rain, this coming Monday. Book now
Hirst and Dunphy talk at least once a day. It is Dunphy who has guided his client’s financial affairs and helped make him a multimillionaire. Hirst, by the way, is — according to ArtReview — number one on its power list, primarily because of his extraordinarily high prices. These days, Hirst is not so much an artist as an industry, employing more than 50 people and running four studios. I wonder if there is a profit-share scheme for those workers who toil on the pieces that Hirst signs off.
A year ago, the Tate announced that 20 British artists, including Hirst, Lucian Freud, Rachel Whiteread, Gilbert and George, and Howard Hodgkin, were to donate at least one of their works to the gallery. Twelve months on, just two, Paula Rego and Richard Long, have done so.
Chris Ofili was another on the list. Having done very nicely out of the Tate, which, controversially, bought his Upper Room, Ofili ought to oblige pretty soon. Maybe as a parting gift when he steps down as a trustee at the end of November?
The plan is to demolish the most hated. But architectural tastes change. For example, the 30-year-old National Theatre was long regarded as a brutalist concrete monstrosity. Now it has come into vogue. Even some 1960s tower blocks have been listed by the government.
Demolition is the flip side of BBC2’s Restoration. The winner of its first series in 2003 was Salford’s Victoria Baths. It was promised £3m towards restoration by the heritage lottery fund, yet at least £18m is really needed. The local council is not being generous, and restoring it to its former glory now looks like a pipe dream. Maybe it would be easier for the baths to go into Demolition.
Despite now having ITVs 1, 2, 3 and 4, the commercial network has not shown this fascinating programme. This is probably because it doesn’t fit in with its I’m a Celebrity ...or X Factor mentality.
