Ship with 5,000 cars sinking

The US Coast Guard and Air Force were attempting to rescue 22 crew from a cargo ship carrying nearly 5,000 cars last night after it rolled almost on to its side and began taking on water.

Initial attempts failed to lift the men from the 654ft Cougar Ace 230 miles south of the Aleutian Islands.

A Coast Guard plane dropped three life rafts, but they were swept underneath the ship, which was carrying Japanese cars to Canada.

Rescuers then dropped another raft but the crew had taken refuge on the high side of the tilted vessel and the raft was beyond their reach. The men were wearing survival suits, officials said.

A merchant marine ship reached the vessel and tried to rig a line to keep it from listing further but this attempt also failed.

The Cougar Ace carried lifeboats and rafts but it was too risky for the crew to try to reach them, said Greg Beuerman, a spokesman for the Tokyo-based ship owner, O.S.K. Lines.

One crew member had a broken leg, but no other injuries were reported. (AP)
