• Tipped by many as a potential England boss after a hugely influential playing career, Bryan Robson failed to live up to his immense promise in early managerial roles. Capped 90 times by his country, 65 of which were earned while wearing the captain's armband, Robson also captained Manchester United to two Premier League titles and four FA Cups, as well as the Cup Winners' Cup in 1991. He left Old Trafford in 1994 to become player-manager of Middlesbrough, then in the first division, and guided them to the top-flight at the first attempt. But despite attracting a host of world stars to the Riverside - including Fabrizio Ravanelli, Juninho and Emerson - Robson failed to bring any silverware to Teesside, losing in the final of the League Cup twice and the FA Cup once. Boro's league form was unimpressive - they finished ninth, 12th and 14th - and the writing was on the wall for Robson when Terry Venables was appointed to work alongside him for the last six months of the 2000-01 season. He parted company with the club in June 2001 and was then to remain out of the game for the next two years, despite continually being linked with high-profile managerial vacancies. He took over at cash-strapped Bradford City in November 2003, but failed to prevent their relegation to League One and left Valley Parade with a record of just seven wins from 28 games. He was unveiled as the successor to Gary Megson at the Hawthorns in November 2004, when the club turned to their former hero to secure their Premiership survival.
