Surrey place faith in Pakistan pair

SURREY, the county champions, have re-signed Saqlain Mushtaq and Azhar Mahmood, of Pakistan, on two-year contracts. Saqlain has been with the club since 1997 and Azhar had a spell at the Oval at the beginning of last season.

Keith Medlycott, the cricket manager, said: “Azhar made a big impression on the side during his short spell at the start of last season. He fitted straight into the team and I am extremely pleased that we have signed him on a two-year contract. Saqlain has been an integral member of the team in the last five years and has been instrumental in our recent success.”

Surrey have also extended the contracts of Tim Murtagh and Phil Sampson, two young fast bowlers, and James Benning, a batsman, has signed his first full-time contract with club.

Devon Malcolm, the former England fast bowler who will be 40 in February, has agreed a new one-year contract with Leicestershire, the day after Phillip DeFreitas, 36, was announced as the club’s new captain.
