LIKE most of us, Enid Fookes thinks she knows where she lives — in her case, Wimborne in Dorset. Until, that is, she extracts her copy of The Knowledge from The Times on Saturdays, and discovers that she lives in London/East England. “This is annoying because not only are the TV listings incorrect, but more importantly, the arts section is describing events out of my region. What’s going on?”

The editor of The Knowledge is well aware of the difficulties for some readers. He explains that it is published in four regional editions: Ireland/Scotland, North of England, West of England (including the Midlands) and London/East England. This allows us to strip in our critics’ top five highlights in each field of the arts for the area nearest to you. In order to do this, a geographical boundary must be drawn.

“Some readers in, say, Oxford, Southampton or Bournemouth may well feel that they should look to the West for their entertainment rather than to London,” he says. “Still others have told us that their frequent trips to the capital make it the most useful place for highlights. We have to draw the lines somewhere, and we have attempted to do so with the greatest happiness of the greatest number in mind.

“In doing so, we do of course take into account the preferences of readers; so that if we receive a notable groundswell of opinion in a particular direction, we would certainly be prepared to reconsider our boundaries.

“Finally, in order to clarify to readers which edition they are receiving and where those boundaries are drawn, we now include a map of Britain on page 3, shaded to indicate its catchment area. We hope this will clear up any confusion that still lingers.”

Well, up to a point. John Cox promptly e-mailed from Cumbria: “I am an avid reader of The Knowledge each Saturday morning. However, recently I was disturbed to see a small map of Britain on page 3. This informed me I was reading the North of England edition, and to prove the point the North of England was coloured black on the map. The black area extended as far south as the Wash and as far north as Berwick-upon-Tweed. However, it did not include Cumbria. Now, we are an independently minded people up here, but do you know something we do not?” Apologies to Cumbria from The Knowledge editor, who assures me the map has now been redrawn.

Rosemary English sends us her compliments from Goring-by-Sea: “I was tempted to buy a Times one Saturday when you were giving away a free copy of The African Queen. What a pleasant surprise! Not only is it far easier to read a smaller sized newspaper, but I actually read a Saturday paper from cover to cover (apart from the sports section, of course — there are limits) for the first time in ages. With apologies to the Telegraph , I haven’t bought another copy. I am devoted to the Samurai Su Doku and have bought the odd midweek paper as well to get to grips with the killer version. My only tiny grumble is that the weather page is a bit hidden away but, having said that, I am delighted to see that you tell me what the weather has been like in Brisbane, as my sister lives there. Other newspapers tend to concentrate on Sydney and Perth. All in all, £1.10 is an incredibly reasonable price to pay for 200 pages of newsprint plus the magazine plus the Notorious DVD given away with this week’s copy. Keep up the good work!”
