CAMERON WHITE will not forget his first experience as Somerset captain as Robin Martin-Jenkins and Luke Wright hit 57 off 26 balls to maintain Sussex’s 100 per cent record in an extraordinary finish to a rain-interrupted match.

White, only 22 but already captain of Victoria for two years, thought that he had the points in the bag when rain stopped play with Sussex, chasing a target of 159 in a game already reduced to 24 overs, struggling at 63 for four from 10.3 overs and apparently doomed to their first defeat.

The rain stopped, however, and though Matthew Prior, who had kept Sussex in the game by hitting 43 off 38 balls after they had lost four wickets for no runs in ll balls, was out immediately and Mike Yardy could not bat because of a dislocated finger, Martin-Jenkins and Wright kept their heads to get Sussex home with 10 balls to spare.

Martin-Jenkins scored 34 off 27 balls, Wright plundered 32 off only 13 and poor White, who has taken over from the injured Ian Blackwell, conceded 15 in his solitary over.
