Can we have our villa back?

Iraq is trying to reclaim the white stone mansion that was Saddam Hussein’s £8.5 million holiday home in the South of France.

The dictator bought the house, on “Billionaire’s Hill” in Cannes, 20 years ago. It has sweeping views over the French Riviera, but has stood empty since the collapse of his regime in 2003 and is an asset frozen by the UN.

The last person there was an Iraqi caretaker, who left with everything of value that he could carry. He left behind a gold four-poster bed and gold bathroom taps.

A second Saddam mansion, at Grasse, near Cannes, was occupied by squatters but is now falling into ruin. Villagers complain that it is an eyesore.
