USP An ambitious day spa in a former textile mill.

AMBIENCE Unusual setting in a former textile mill-turned-apartments (overnight stay available, from £85 per person a night). Huge pool, smallish gym and impressive "heat experience" treatments area.

EXPERIENCE Friendly staff. I had three treatments: the facial, a mud exfoliating wrap and a pedicure. One therapist did them all, which prevented three lots of small talk.

FOOD Caters for hearty northern appetites as much as for dieters: dishes range from crispy confit of duck with onion and sultana marmalade to rocket and parmesan salad. Up to £20 for two courses. Wine from £3.75 a glass. Strangely, puds (organic sorbets and ice-creams) are only now being introduced.

IN CROWD Difficult to ascertain as it was almost empty. I've heard that men like Titanic, perhaps because of the post-industrial vibe.

WALLET WATCH You can pay just for the treatments rather than a day rate. The cheapest facial is the 25-minute Reviver, £40. The "Pevonia journey" is the most expensive package at £295, and includes Heat Experience, full body polish, Moroccan cocoon with Rasul mud wrap to condition the skin, hot stones, face mask with eye treatment, and hand and foot treatment. Good value is the Summer Top to Toe Day: Reviver facial, massage, mini manicure, mini-pedicure, gym and pool (Heat Experience, £35 extra) and lunch, £99 per person, until August 31.
