EXPERIENCE I needed relief from an incessant barking cough and the aching muscles it caused around my rib cage, the result of a two-week viral chest infection. I booked in for a full-on deep tissue massage “to help alleviate pain, muscle spasm and stress”, but the therapist wisely suggested a medium pressure version. Within five minutes my cough eased and I felt less tense. An hour later, my aches and pains were much relieved. I had my face massaged, too, and my wife commented on how much brighter my wan complexion looked afterwards. The spa has its own aromatic oils, certified organic and supplied locally.

FOOD Tea is on offer but I was given a soothing, hot honey and lemon drink instead.

IN CROWD City-based workers living locally who live and play hard and probably see spa treatments as an essential not a luxury.

WALLET WATCH Well worth £70. There’s a weekday menu for 30-minute mini treatments including massages for £30, while a five-hour day-of-relaxation costs £250.
