007's dirty habit banned as new star confirmed

JAMES BOND will be banned from smoking in his latest film as it could have a bad influence on children — but murder and torture are just fine, Daniel Craig said yesterday after being confirmed as the new 007.

Ian Fleming’s spy was a 70-a-day smoker but as an iconic hero for a PG 12 film in the 21st century, “it’s not quite the right thing”, the film’s director, Martin Campbell, said yesterday.

Craig, a 37-year-old blond actor from the Wirral, brought to an end two years of speculation over who would play the role. Looking the part in sunglasses and a black suit, even if he was chewing gum, he made a dramatic debut by arriving aboard a Royal Marines speedboat for a press conference on the banks of the Thames.

“I’m speechless at the moment,” he said as he posed for photographers.

The producer Barbara Broccoli said that production on the 21st Bond film, Casino Royale, based on Fleming’s first 007 book, would begin in January.
