KIRSTEN RAUSING

9 £1,600m Inheritance and bloodstock

Rausing, 50, the new chairman of the European Federation of Throroughbred Breeding Associations, could buy the whole industry with little effort. But her position in this august body shows how far she has risen in the racehorse breeding world. From East Anglia, her home for more than 20 years, she runs two studs. She has another in Ireland. Her fortune, however, comes from milk cartons. Her father Gad owned Tetra Laval, the Swiss-based packaging group. When he died in 2000, his fortune was shared by his widow and three children. A will has not been published, but Forbes, the American business magazine, now values the family holding at £8.6 billion. About £2.15 billion of that wealth could have accrued to Kirsten, who is a non-executive director on Tetra Laval's board. But we are more cautious in our valuation: first, because we reckon the Rausings have been huge benefactors to charity, and second, because Forbes's figures may not have reflected recent falls in company values.
