| It's bad news for the BBC. Howard de Walden Estates says a planned redevelopment of Broadcasting House in London would overshadow its buildings and it wants £11m compensation. A writ has been issued seeking to stop the project. The Howard de Walden family is, of course, well able to fund a protracted legal battle. Czernin, 67, is the eldest of the four daughters of Lord Howard de Walden, who died in 1999, and represents the family in this list. Profits at Howard de Walden Estates and Welbeck Land, the two main family companies, fell to £19.5m in 2002 while their net assets rose to £48m. The family's real fortune, however, lies in its 92 prime acres between Regent's Park and Oxford Street. Much of this wealth is held by family trusts, but our sources, who know the estate, think we are right to raise our valuation of it slightly to £1,050m. Other family assets are worth £100m.
