| Life may be tough for Bamford's JCB company, but when a charity wanted help with a sanctuary for orphaned elephants in Sri Lanka, he handed over a £35,000 digger at his Staffordshire headquarters. Although the main markets for the diggers - Europe, Britain and America - are weak, the business, founded by his late father in 1945, is still profitable. JCB Service and JCB Compact Products made £19.4m profit on £866m sales in 2001 and we value them at £500m. Bamford, 57, and his family have other assets including property in Barbados and a Gloucestershire estate.
