FRED WALKER and FAMILY

34= £650m Steel, aviation and property

With Blackburn Rovers riding high in the Premiership, Jack Walker would have been on top of the world. Sadly, he died in 2000 after investing £100m in the team. His brother, Fred, 77, is now titular head of the family. He still lives in Blackburn and was intimately involved in the steel stockholding business the pair inherited from their father. They sold it to British Steel in 1989 for £330m. They also kept £70m of property, a portfolio that has grown sharply in value. However, share falls and a £10m loss in 2001-01 at Flybe, an aviation firm, have reduced the family's overall worth this year.
