SIR TERRY MATTHEWS

42 £610m Telecommunications and hotels

Matthews is feeling the pinch as his stake in Alcatel, the French telecom group, has shrunk to just £159m in value. Less than three years ago, the holding was worth more than £2 billion. Matthews, 59, left Wales after university for Canada, where he founded Newbridge Networks. He floated it in 1989 and sold it 11 years later for his Alcatel holding. Still, he has a host of other assets, including the Celtic Manor golf resort, that keep his bank balance healthy. In all, his business interests are worth at least £550m. His seven homes, yacht, jet and other private assets are worth £60m.
