JOHN BOYLE and FAMILY

504= £68m Travel, property and investments

The property market has been kind to Boyle, 51, over the past year. The newsagent's son from Bellshill in Lanarkshire made his first fortune pioneering cheap travel with Falcon Leisure in 1975. He sold it for £2.2m in 1983. Boyle started again in 1991 Direct Holidays, based in Glasgow, which was sold to Airtours for £81m in 1998, netting Boyle £56m for his family stake. Since then he has become a business angel, and has bankrolled Motherwell football club, writing off £10.5m there. His Hamilton Portfolio investment company has £92m of net assets, but after borrowings are taken into account, the family is worth about £68m.
