Kirsten and Jorn Rausing

7 £2,575m Inheritance, bloodstock and investments

In a show of industrial solidarity last July, Kirsten Rausing, 51, was one of four directors of the National Stud who resigned over the appointment of a new chairman from outside the racing business. As the owner of two East Anglian studs, she knows more than most what makes a good racehorse. Her younger brother, Jorn, 44, who lives quietly in London, has put £15m into Ocado, the online grocery business in which Waitrose is a partner. He is a non-executive director. The Rausings are two of the three offspring of Stockholm-born Gad Rausing, co-founder of the Tetra Laval packaging company. Gad died in 2000 and his fortune went to his widow and three children. Forbes magazine valued their combined stake at £5.15 billion in its world billionaire list in February. We ascribe half of that to Kirsten and Jorn.
