| As the City recovers its nerve after the dark days of 2002-03, bankers and fund managers are perking up - and none more so than Schroder, 71. His former merchant bank, Schroders, has reinvented itself as a fund manager and the family's 48% stake has shot up in value to £747m. In 2000 the family netted £320m when the family's investment banking business was sold. Their fortune is also boosted by past dividends, their 16,500-acre estate on the Scottish isle of Islay and other property.
