| Wales's first billionaire, Matthews, 60, plans to erect a 60ft "goddess of the tides" statue in the Bristol Channel in time for the 2010 Ryder Cup golf tournament, which will take place at Celtic Manor, his £120m hotel and golf resort in Gwent. Matthews, who made his fortune in Canada, sold his quoted company Newbridge Networks to the French telecoms giant Alcatel for £4.4 billion in 2000. He collected more than £1 billion in Alcatel shares, which have recovered to about £480m after the high-tech crash. He also has investments in Britain and Canada, large land holdings in Canada and personal assets.
