Keith Miller and family

120 £368m Construction

A Scottish invasion of the London and southeastern housing market is planned by Miller, 55, who runs Britain's biggest privately owned housebuilder and property company. The Edinburgh-based Miller Group certainly has the firepower to take over a business in the south. While profits fell to £27.4m on £602m sales in 2002, the group's 2003 figures saw pre-tax profits rise by 47% to £40.2m on sales of £742m. At the time of going to press, the company was considering a project closer to home: making an offer for two valuable sites in the Scottish capital - Scottish & Newcastle's Fountain brewery, said to be worth as much as £60m, and Heart of Midlothian FC's Tynecastle stadium. Miller joined the family-dominated business in 1975, became a director a year later and in 1994 became chief executive. The business is worth about £375m, valuing the Millers' 93% stake at about £349m. Healthy past dividends (£22.5m before tax from 1994 to 2002) and other assets boost the family's wealth.
