Thomas Mackie, a wartime RAF radio operator, built Midlands-based CEF Holdings into one of Britain's biggest electrical wholesalers and it is still owned by his Swiss-based family via trusts. In 2001-02, its profits fell to £10.2m on £406m sales, valuing it at £80m. The family trusts have enjoyed at least £132m in dividends, before tax, since 1993.
