6 £4,375m Aluminium
Never far away from controversy, former metal trader Deripaska, 36, is facing possible legal action by the Reuben brothers (qv) for allegedly breaking a joint-venture agreement and illegally diverting assets. Deripaska should be hardened to conflict, having survived the gangster wars in Russia's aluminium industry in the 1990s. In 2000, aged 31, he took control of Russian Aluminium (Rusal), the country's leading producer, through his holding company Basic Element, which owns 75%. Today, Rusal is one of the world's largest private companies, with a £2.35 billion turnover and 63,000 employees. It is the world's second largest aluminium producer. Deripaska also controls GAZ, an automobile maker, aircraft producer Aviacar, insurance company Ingosstrakh and several other interests. He spends a significant amount of time in London; his position in Russia is seen as somewhat vulnerable because of the litigation and investigations into his tax payments. A close friend of Roman Abramovich (qv), he is married to a member of the family of former President Boris Yeltsin. In its 2005 rich list, the Russian magazine Finans put his wealth at £4,375m, and we agree.
