| Aviation is proving a fertile area for Latsis, 58, whose PrivatAir business runs wide-bodied jets that ferry Middle Eastern royalty and wealthy clients on holidays or shopping trips. Latsis makes it on to this list by virtue of both birth and ability. His late father was John Latsis, a Greek shipping tycoon. But Spiro has made his own fortune and is highly regarded in academic circles for his knowledge of economic theory and behaviour. The London-based family's largest holding is the EFG Bank Group, with private banking operations in London, Geneva and Monaco. It merged with a Spanish bank last year but the family remains a significant shareholder. The Latsis Group, the main family business, also took a stake worth more than £300m in Hellenic Petroleum, a Greek-based oil refiner. With other assets including ships and a large property portfolio, Latsis and his family are valued at £2.4 billion by Forbes in its 2004 World Billionaires. We agree. |
