| With a passion for golf, Lewis hosts the Tavistock Cup tournament every March in Florida, raising $500,000 for charity. But he faces a tricky dilemma over who to support because he owns the two clubs that compete: the Lake Nona club (resident Ernie Els) and the Isleworth club (resident Tiger Woods). Born in the East End of London, Lewis, 68, owes his fortune to his skills in the foreign exchange markets. From his family's restaurant business in London, he moved on to set up shops selling luxury goods to tourists. Realising the potential of foreign exchange dealing, he moved to the Bahamas in the 1970s to start trading. Since then Lewis has shrewdly invested his profits through the Tavistock Group, which has interests in 75 companies in areas including property, financial services, life sciences, energy, industry and consumer goods. Among his property holdings are 3,600 acres in the Bahamas and 8,000 acres in Florida. In Britain he was recently involved with a group of investors who sold their stake in housebuilder Countryside Properties for a profit of about £10m. Other assets include property and a stake in Tottenham Hotspur football club. |
