| Irrepressible is the word for mobile phone magnate Caudwell, 52, who embarked last October on a 2,300-mile bike ride from Athens to Stoke to raise £500,000 for his Caudwell Charitable Trust. Before he left he took the time to declare war on internet giants AOL and Wanadoo by launching a £60m cut-price internet and telephone venture to lure customers to his Phones 4u chain. In 2003 Caudwell sold his Singlepoint customer billing company for £405m, leaving him with Phones 4u, distribution firm 20:20 Logistics and novelty gift chain Discovery Store. Today he is the biggest independent player in the European mobile phone industry. His Caudwell Group's 2003 profit rose by almost 50% to £45m; other businesses within the group are easily worth £800m. Our total takes in sale proceeds and assets worth £75m, including a £10m Staffordshire mansion. |
