| In 2002 the Moores family sold the Littlewoods department stores and mail order operation to the Barclay brothers (qv) as part of a £750m package. The family, led by Grantchester, 79, founded Littlewoods in 1923 as a pools company before branching out into mail order and retailing. It sold some stores in 1998 and the pools business in 2000; the proceeds and past dividends are worth £445m. The family has a £40m stake in Liverpool FC, which is chaired by David Moores, Grantchester's cousin and also gives
