| For years Tina Green has played the glamorous hostess beside her businessman husband Philip at their Monaco mansion, giving toga parties, a £4m bar mitzvah celebration for their son, entertaining stars including the singer Beyoncé and being the legal owner of the great bulk of the familys wealth for tax reasons. This year she came out of his shadow, however, designing the Home Store concept at the couples Bhs flagship store in Chichester. Its not a hobby, she insists. I live it, I breathe it, I love everything about designing a home. This is my baby. Picking up an ultimate range white towel, she says: I use these at home and on the yacht. That would be the couples £20m boat, Lionheart, where they recently partied with Prince Albert of Monaco and Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne (qv). Mrs Green has been spending 18-hour days on the Home Store concept although during a walk around the store with one interviewer, it transpired she knew the price of nothing on display. And why should she? A £1.2 billion dividend paid to her by Arcadia last October was the biggest annual payout to an individual by a British company. Tina owns 92% of the shares in Arcadia, which is one of two leading retail chains in Green family hands. Philip, 54, is the undisputed king of the high street. The flamboyant entrepreneur borrowed £807m to buy Arcadia and the loan was quickly repaid. The business, best known for brands such as Topshop and Dorothy Perkins, is easily worth £2.5 billion. But at his other chain, Bhs, life is not so rosy, despite his wifes recent input. He recently warned that operating profits would be 30% lower in 2005-06, coming in at between £75m to £85m. In all, the Green familys retail assets are worth about £3 billion and dividends from both businesses over the past six years total £1.6 billion. We reckon Green has another £300m of assets including his £27m Gulfstream jet, a new £35m yacht on order and the proceeds from earlier property and retail deals. In all, the Greens are worth £4.9 billion. |
