| The privatisation of Russias Svyazinvest telecommunications company is attracting much interest especially from Blavatnik, 48, who owns 25% and wishes to buy the rest. Blavatnik, who has a £41m home in Londons Kensington Palace Gardens, emigrated to America in 1978 but made his fortune in mother Russia. His most successful deal was the result of a partnership under the AAR umbrella involving his US-based equity investment firm Access, Renova (its Russian affiliate) and the Alfa Group, run by Mikhail Fridman. This trio held controlling stakes in the Russian-based Tyumen Oil Company (TNK). In 2003, AAR and BP jointly formed TNK-BP, now Russias third largest oil company. AAR netted about £3 billion while retaining a 50% stake in TNK-BP. Other Access interests include coal mines, a Kazakhstan power company, property and telecommunications. |
