Lord Sainsbury, 65, said last year that he wanted to be the first Briton to give £1 billion to charity. A few weeks earlier, his Gatsby Trust sold £130m worth of shares to help fund an ambitious charitable programme that has seen it spend £500m on a range of worthy causes since 1967.Ennobled by Tony Blair, Sainsbury has given £11.5m to the Labour party over seven years. He is also an unpaid science minister. The family is no longer involved in running the supermarket chain and last month sold another tranche of shares, leaving it with a stake (excluding charitable holdings) of about £1.4 billion. Other assets and dividends totalling £450m from 1999-2005 take the family to £1.6 billion after tax and charitable donations.
