| Whittaker, 64, bought Mersey Docks and Harbour Company in 2005 for £771m. The Isle of Man-based businessman is building an empire embracing ports, retailing and airports. He took his company Peel Holdings private in 2004 and has more than 68% of the shares. Among Peels other assets is John Lennon airport in Liverpool and Clydeport, the Scottish ports operation. In the year to March 2005 Peel had £1.34 billion of net assets. Whittakers stake would be worth £915m. With the rise in the value of ports, we add £300m. He has other wealth. |
