| Matthews, 62, Wales’s richest person, owns the Celtic Manor resort in Newport, where golf’s Ryder Cup will be contested in 2010. He made a fortune in Canada with telecommunications company Mitel and then Newbridge Networks. Matthews sold the latter in 2000 for £4.4 billion, collecting more than £1 billion in Alcatel shares. These are worth about £530m and other wealth takes him to £1.2 billion. |
