| When Reg Vardy, the car dealer, was taken over in February, Petchey, 80, walked off with £30m. Last year he spent £98m buying 205 pubs. Londoner Petchey built up a fleet of taxis before moving into used cars, property and timeshare. He plans to give the bulk of his fortune to charity and has already donated more than £15m to Essex and east London clubs, schools and organisations for young people.
