Money has cascaded into O’Reilly’s coffers. His 26.2% stake in newspaper publisher Independent News & Media, where he is chief executive, rose in value from £313m to £355m, helped by its expansion into India. He gained £39m when Acron International Resources was sold to Canadian mining group Lundin last year and AIM-quoted exploration company, Providence Resources, run by his son Tony Jr — in which he has a 45% stake — leapt in value to about £48m. O’Reilly, 69, increased his holding in Waterford Wedgwood to £35m and his stake in Heinz, the American food giant he once headed, stands at about £179m. Other assets including a stake in Eircom, Fitzwilton, hotel interests, art and homes — such as the one in the Bahamas where he is tax resident — are worth more than £223m. The sale of Portmarnock hotel and golf links netted him £19m, and he earns £15m a year. His wife, Chryss, 55, a Greek shipping heiress, has assets worth £464m.
