Last month Hunters consortium took over housebuilder Crest Nicholson for £715m. That followed the £311m takeover of Wyevale Garden Centres and the £1.1 billion paid for retirement home specialist McCarthy & Stone. His charitable Hunter Foundation has set up a £55m joint venture with Bill Clinton, the former American president, to fund projects in Africa, to which he has given £6m in the past year. He has spent £3m domestically to help young people not in employment or education. Hunter, 45, built up his Sports Division chain before selling it to JJB Sports for £290m. He has invested in property through his West Coast Capital company and in ventures with Sir Philip Green (qv), the retail king. He is Scotlands first homegrown billionaire.
