He has not gone as far as David Cameron’s kitchen webcam, but it is the nearest the heir to the throne is likely to get to a look-at-me slot on YouTube. The Prince of Wales has made a video.

It is not what you would call breathlessly revealing. But you get to see him talking on the phone and strolling around Birmingham with his wife, Camilla Parker-Bowles.

In a revamp of his rather staid official website, the Prince has included a short documentary video.

The opening scene shows the Prince in an open-necked shirt on the phone in his office at Clarence House early in the morning. You hear him say to an unnamed person: “I hope that the actual valuation will show that it is really worth doing it.”

It is not a quote that would leap from an episode of I’m A Celebrity. . . on to the front pages of the tabloids. But this is not reality television; it is PR.

We see the couple climb into a Jaguar and head for a youth community project in Birmingham. “I’m so grateful for all your help on this, if I may say so,” says our star in mid-handshake. The narrator’s voiceover reminds us that the couple carry out more than 200 engagements like this every year.

They move on to a dance school, where the principal gushes: “We are truly delighted; it’s a very historic day in Elmhurst’s history.”

Throughout the eight-minute production, the Duchess says very little. Perhaps her great talent is that she knew from the start that a supporting actor doesn’t out-act the star.
