J. K. Rowling and the Hollywood studio behind the film adaptations of her Hogwarts adventures are taking legal action to stop the unauthorised publication of a Harry Potter encyclopaedia.
The bestselling author has been incensed to discover that RDR Books, an independent American publisher, is planning to make a profit from a “Harry Potter Lexicon”. Rowling is planning to write a similar book herself - and donate all the royalties to charity.
This summer, she revealed that she was likely to write at least one more book – an encyclopaedia of Harry Potter characters, the background stories she had already written but had to cut, such as Harry’s schoolfriend Dean Thomas.
The author who, as a penniless single mother living in Edinburgh in the early 1990s struggled to find a publisher for the first book, urged patience as “I’d really like a break”, having just finished the seventh and final book, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows.
Rowling’s notes, it has been said, are almost as detailed as those made by J. R. R. Tolkein for his Middle-earth, the setting of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Yesterday, in a joint statement, the author and the studio said that they had issued a claim in the federal court in the Southern District of New York against RDR Books: “In this claim they objected to its infringement of their intellectual property rights through the publication of its forthcoming book, Harry Potter Lexicon.”
The book is believed to have been written by someone who runs one of the many Potter “fansites”.
Ms Rowling added: “It’s common knowledge that I love genuine Harry Potter fansites, which is why I created my own award to recognise their creativity and ingenuity.
“It’s also old news that I hope one day to write the definitive Harry Potter encyclopedia, which will include all the material that never made it into the novels, and that I will give the royalties from this book to charity.
“I cannot, therefore, approve of ‘companion books’ or ‘encyclopaedias’ that seek to pre-empt my definitive Potter reference book for their authors’ own personal gain. The losers in such a situation would be the charities that I hope, eventually, to benefit.”
Warner Bros said: “In taking this action, we are seeking to protect our intellectual-property rights in the interests of fans and so that everyone can continue to enjoy Harry Potter books and films in the spirit in which they were created.
“In doing so, we are determined to protect J. K. Rowling’s right to produce her own companion book to the Harry Potter series she created, and to donate all proceeds to charity, as she did with her previous companion books.”
In 2001, Rowling wrote two slim companion Hogwarts schoolbooks. Quidditch Through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them raised more than £15 million for Comic Relief.

Well, I would buy both books, from Jo as from the other person, as I think there is a lot more to say and invest about Harrys world.
But I understand her too, if she allows one person, soon there will be a dozen of diferent encyclopedias swirling around in the world.
Sonia, Mexico,
Dear Ed Moran, I am under no impression that either Ms Rowling or her lawers will be taking my opinions, or financial advice into account. I hope that common sense prevails in the end, and that all parties come to a mutually beneficial agreement.
Of course this is the real world, and as it is the consumers of Harry Potter merchandise who will be buying the book, it will be up to them which book they buy.
Besides, I'm sure Rowling's advertising budget will be bigger than anyone elses, big enough to net more consumer's attention than her competitors. And that's what counts these days.
As for me, a struggling writer, I do my bit for charity when I can. I don't think I'd need more than a million to live the rest of my life comfortably. If I had £100 spare, I'd rather give it to a charity to dole out appropriately.
If I had £20 to spare, I'd rather donate it to directly to Rowling's charity than buy her latest book. It would probably be a waste of paper anyway.

The Harry Potter Lexicon was started way back in 2000. Why the sudden rush to print-publish now? Vander Ark has already reaped the benefits of minor celebrity from his Lexicon: appearances in documentaries and DVD extras, public appearances at fan gatherings, etc. His work in compiling the Lexicon has been acknowledged as definitive by both fans and the Author herself for its thoroughness and complexity. Therefore, there can be no motive for Vander Ark to want to release the Lexicon in print form other than personal gain.
Rowling has always been extraordinarily generous in allowing these fan sites to exist in the first place by providing direct comments, interviews and personally-bestowed awards, even though she would have been well within her rights to have them shut down at the outset. These are Rowling's characters, Rowling's spells, Rowling's creations; and I don't think it's fair or ethical for someone to just put them in alphabetical order and sell them for profit.
Zelmia, Sacramento,
If you paid attention to the circumstances you would notice that she is not criticizing the creation of fansites and encyclopedias but rather the use of said media FOR PROFIT. As for the Lord of the Rings encyclopedias, the Lord of the Rings is in the public domain because the property rights have expired; this is NOT the case with Harry Potter.

Mr Corr, "you have more money than me. Please spare a few hundred and send it to me." That line of thought doesn't seem so good now, does it?
It's her money: she (not you) decides.
Ed Moran, Torquay,
I am not seeing this as a lost of potential profit to Ms Rowling but more as another person or company exploiting her work. Harry Potter belongs to her and is not public domain. Why should her let someone capitalize on her creation?
Colin, Montreal,
As ones net worth approaches and then surpasses the $1 Billion mark, all sorts of things become imaginable. Just ask any billionaire. The 'sense' of it all makes little difference.

Money and fame appear to have gone to the head of JK Rowling, and now she is attacking her own fans who created the websites out of their love for her books, websites which she has admitted to using for when writing her series. The book which is derived from the web-based encylopedia is not going to be a competitor for her own book, and what she is doing is mean-spirited and ungenerous to her fans who have worked on those websites out of love for a long time. She should take a look at herself and see what she has become - a soulless corporate entity who sues everyone in sight for the slightest infringement.
hazh, Oxford,
There are numerous Lord of The Rings encyclopaedias and a large number relating to Sherlock Holmes to name just two.
Come off it Ms Rowling, your books are in the public domain and anyone can write books about them without your permission.
If you're so concerned about charities give them the money you're about to pay your lawyers and shut up.
Roger Tilbury, worthing,
J. K. Rowling has every right to fight to protect her intellectual-property!!! She created this world that we all love and therefore only she can write a definitive Harry Potter encyclopaedia, which will provide a true account of the characters to satisfy all Harry Potter fans who just want more and more!!! The fans and more importantly needy causes are the real winners here! J.K I hope you rein victorious!
Paula Falvey, Cork, Ireland
She is the creator of Harry Potter and should have a say in anything and everything having to do with Harry Potter. Regardless of how much money she has, she is willing to write books for charity and that act should not be destroyed by someone seeking financial gain.

Oh dear me, Ms Rowling, surely you could spare a few million of your profits from the series of novels. You have more than enough to go round the charities you want to donate to. You're richer than the Queen for Dumbledore's sake.
By all means write a companion encyclopedia, but unauthorised guides written by fans are common-place. Have you seen how many Da Vinci Code companions there are in bookshops these days?
Time for you to leave Hogwarts and join the real world!
Andrew Corr, Burton On Trent, England
i love harry potter its great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
mia, forks, washington
While I look up to Rowling for her story telling ability and the Harry Potter series as a whole, there wouldn't be a need for a encyclopedia had she concluded the seventh book a little better.
