Watch video interviews with Atonement stars Keira Knightley and Jame McAvoy
The British film Atonement looks set to be the star of this year's Orange British Academy Film Awards, after it received 14 nominations in the list of contenders announced this morning.
The movie has been nominated in the categories Best Film and Best British Film, while Keira Knightley and James McAvoy have been nominated for Leading Actress and Leading Actor, and Saoirse Ronan receives a Supporting Actress nomination.
The film is also up for Best Director for Joe Wright, Adapted Screenplay, Music, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Sound, Costume Design and Make-Up and Hair.
The tragic period romance is set in Britain during the war years, and is adapted from a tear-jerking novel by Ian McEwan.
The prizes, to be awarded at a ceremony at the Royal Opera House in London on February 10, are considered an important indicator of prospects at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles next month.
This year they have a higher-than-usual profile, because of the ongoing Hollywood writers’ strike, which has thrown the staging of the Oscars into jeopardy. This year’s Golden Globes ceremony, where Atonement won Best Film, was replaced by a short press conference and no stars turned up.
Two other films receive nine Bafta nominations: No Country For Old Men, a noir western which is the latest offbeat offering from America's Coen brothers, Joel and Ethan Coen, and There Will Be Blood, a historical epic starring the British-born actor Daniel Day-Lewis.
La Vie En Rose, the movie about French singer Edith Piaf, is up for seven gongs. The Bourne Ultimatum, the culmination of the highly lucrative series of Bourne action thrillers starring Matt Damon, has six nominations, while American Gangster, The Lives Of Others and Michael Clayton get five each.
It is a particularly good year for Cate Blanchett, who is up for two awards - for Supporting Actress for I’m Not There, and Leading Actress for her role in Elizabeth: The Golden Age.
Elizabeth: The Golden Age also received nominations for Production Design, Costume Design and Make-Up and Hair.
Other Leading Actress nominees are Julie Christie, who won a Golden Globe award on Sunday for her role as an Alzheimer's sufferer in Away From Her, while Marion Cotillard is nominated for La Vie En Rose, a biopic about the French torch singer Edith Piaf, and Canadian actress Ellen Page is listed for Juno.
Atonement star McAvoy will be competing with Hollywood heartthrob George Clooney (Michael Clayton), Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood), Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises) and Ulrich Muhe (The Lives Of Others) in the Leading Actor category.
Paul Greengrass is up against fellow British filmmaker Wright for Best Director for The Bourne Ultimatum, starring Matt Damon, along with the Coen brothers for No Country For Old Men.

Don't forget the Bafta's also support independent film-makers.
This year they are running a competition for the best 1-minute film by a non-professional. See the entries here:

Hear! Hear! I agree with Santa Monica's Alan D .... And from the Royal Opera House! Sure beats that large suburban shed that houses Oscar & Co.
