Angry Indian crowds beat effigies of Richard Gere and burnt photographs of the Celebrity Big Brother winner Shilpa Shetty today after the two shared a very public embrace.
Gere kissed the Bollywood actress on the hand and then the cheek before ostentatiously sweeping her up in his arms during an HIV/AIDS awareness event in New Delhi yesterday.
Public displays of affection are generally taboo in India and when newspapers were full of pictures of the kiss this morning protests begun in cities across India.
Members of the right-wing Hindu nationalist group Shiv Sena lead the protestations in Mumbai. They burnt effigies of Gere and beat them with sticks, while setting fire to glamorous photographs of Shetty.
In the northern town of Meerut crowds chanted; “Down with Shilpa Shetty!”, while similar protests were held in Varanasi, Hinduism’s holiest city.
A spokesman for the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party condemned the kiss, he said: “Such a public display is not part of Indian tradition.”
Shetty attempted to calm the matter today, by explaining that the kiss was part of Hollywood culture. “I understand this is his culture, not ours. But this was not such a big thing or so obscene for people to overreact in such manner,” she told the Press Trust of India news agency. "I understand people’s sentiments, but I don’t want a foreigner to take bad memories from here.”
Shetty became famous in the UK when she was at the centre of a racism row in Celebrity Big Brother, during which she was ostracised by her housemates.

How ridiculous and hypocritical. These people should take a look at any modern bollywood movie which show more than just pecks on the cheek with all singing all dancing (pun intended) love making scenes.
Agree with John from Salford, where do they get these effigies from!?
Daljit, London,
This just goes to prove how uninformed the Indian public really are. Shilpa pointed out it was just a peck on the cheek (we could all see that) yet they didn't think no they got violent again. Also where do they get these effigies because they always seem to be ready is their an ordering service ? "Yes I'll have two Richard Gere's and a Shilpa please"
Unfortunately this whole affiar has shown yet again how far behind the rest of the world they still are

I can understand the Indians' outrage: he looks like a horrible old man foisting his attentions on a good-looking woman who is half his age and only seems to be bearing his attention out of politeness. It almost looks like a rugby tackle. He should know to behave in a more dignified manner at his age.
I thought Richard Gere was Mr New Age Buddhist, so in touch with other cultures?? Obviously not.
MB, Edinburgh,
As a long standing Buddhist Gere should know the customs and have shown the appropriate respect. The poor female looks totally alarmed, verging on nervous.

I an Indian to the core feel ashamed of the actions of Shivsainiks and BJP activist-the so called bunch of self styled guardians of Indian morality and vigilantes.I feel I am living in Pakistan or still worst in Talibanistan. What recently happened with Nilofer Bakhtiar the Pakistani Minister,is being replayed with greater vigilantism in India.
What happened with Shilpa was perhaps an extempore by Richard Gere being not aware of Indian culture and extremist vultures. Thanks to Shilpa, she did not cowed down and did not offer any apology.
There was nothing vulgar between the embrace and the kiss between Shilpa and Gere.If it was vulgar then the temples at Khajuraho and Konark should be destryoid forthwith. The Hindi film industry which is producing vugarest form love expressions in the hundreds of films must be closed down. The uncouth relationships being showed day in and day out should be stopped and India declared a Taliban country unabashedly.

Shilpa's reaction was very matured. India is badly politicised. These self-declared moral policemen create silly issues to catch the public/media attention. unlike Shilpa they dont care about Country's reputation. It was a no issue and media sould have acted more responsively.
