Having taken us from infection to apocalypse in his four zombie films from Night of the Living Dead (1968) to Land of the Dead (2005), Romero restarts the process in the handheld mock-vérité style recently seen in Cloverfield.

We see the action through the eyes – or rather the lens – of Jason Creed (Close), one of a group of film students who take to the road to escape the army of corpses who are waking up with a hunger for human flesh.

As ever, Romero uses his buckets of gristle and gore to make a serious point, in this case our loss of trust in the media in a post 9/11 era.
