Although Bob Dylan is a creature of many faces, it takes guts to channel him through, among others, an Australian woman, a black child and both Batman and the Joker. But Haynes’s film, which flits between documentary, road movie and romance, is a flawed but inspired attempt to explore Dylan’s complex relationships with his fellow artists, lovers, fans and the media. The only bum note is Richard Gere’s wilderness hermit Dylan.
