Watch the Harry Potter press conference
With searchlights blazing hundreds of metres into the night sky, neon blistering everywhere and a battery of digital cameras capturing every second, the most ultra-modern city on earth seems a million miles from the forbidding stone walls of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
But it was here last night in Tokyo that the world was led back – with a good dose of Hollywood razzmatazz – into the realm of magic and given its first glimpse of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: the film that sees the boy wizard growing up to face the dreadful truth of his destiny.
For it is in this latest – fifth – cinematic outing of J.K. Rowling’s saga that Harry painfully begins to understand the battles with evil that lie ahead. It is a film where the balance of narrative tips from action to intrigue and there are some that will find that tedious.
But why, with a cast full to the brim with British talent, a British author and Hollywood’s own brand of special effects magic, should the film have had its world premiere in the Japanese capital? The answer may lie with the movie’s producer, Warner Bros, and the grim commercial dynamics of the notorious “Narita Index” – the number of screaming fans who greet a given Hollywood star at Tokyo airport. When he last landed for a Japanese premiere five years ago, Daniel Radcliffe was greeted by a hysterical brigade of 2,300 fans. Wednesday’s arrival by the teenage actor – admittedly quite early in the morning – drew an emaciated platoon of only 30 autograph-seekers.
And it is this that most worries Warner Bros, Disney and the other tinseltown studios. Last year’s Japanese box office (the second-biggest in the world for Hollywood) saw domestic films narrowly out-gross Hollywood for the first time since 1985. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was the sole offering that prevented a total washout for Hollywood in 2006.
Collectively, Hollywood has decided that it may be time to treat its Japanese audiences with a little more respect. Hence, the latest Harry Potter film was the third Hollywood world premiere (after Spider-Man 3 and Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man’s Chest) to be held in Tokyo in three months. Yesterday, with a lacklustre al fresco cavalcade of special effects and just a single beaming starlet, you could see that some effort was being made. For their part, a relatively sparse throng of Japan’s die-hard muggles pretended to take the tinseltown bait. The film itself is a solid, occasionally spectacular set-piece that struggles unsuccessfully to give us thrills and fun we have not already had in previous instalments.
It is far crueller than its predecessors and begins to introduce properly the idea that we are no longer in an amusing magical playground, but are en route to an epic confrontation with real victims.
The main story at this stage is the quest of Harry and Dumbledore to persuade an increasingly paranoid and uncomfortable wizarding world that its unspeakably vile nemesis, Voldemort (played by Ralph Fiennes), has returned.
The acting skills of Radcliffe (Harry), Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) and Emma Watson (Hermione) have improved, but not enough to truly flesh out the characters and provide the narrative depth that this transitional, plot-advancing film needs. They have got “angry” and “determined” down pat at this point, but struggle somewhat on the more nuanced grimaces. Harry’s bellowing cod-psychoanalysis of Voldemort is jarringly awful.
Of the adult actors, Imelda Staunton as Dolores Umbridge – Dumbledore’s usurper at Hogwarts – is exquisitely dislikeable. Helena Bonham Carter as the villainous Bellatrix Lestrange is a shining but underused talent.
The director, David Yates, has inserted some lovely touches, including the Weasley twins’ explosive transfer from the world of academia to the world of retail. But overall there is a shortage of those joyful little glimpses of the wizarding world’s furniture that punctuated and perked up the previous films.
The fifth – and longest – book on which the film is based plays a crucial but faintly turgid role in the saga. Much is explained, much is left hanging and there is nothing like the pace of action that readers had grown accustomed to in earlier episodes (especially The Goblet of Fire). The book pulled this off because it was tantalising in what it didn’t tell us.
The film, meanwhile, a necessary digest of the 800-page book, leaves us faintly annoyed that the true denouement of the cycle is now two movies distant.
The chief problem, though, is not really a fault of the film but the near universal Potter-literacy of its prospective audience. Most Potter fans are now laser-focused on the release of the climactic seventh book in three weeks’ time and its promise to bring together the countless loose ends.
As the waiting for the final book grows unbearable, there are moments when this otherwise enjoyable film, though nicely made and through no fault of its own, feels like a chore to be got through before the main course.
— Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is released in Britain on July 12.
you gave it 3 stars its worth much more than that i mean come on its brill and yes i read the book they cant put everything in it would hav been 5hours long and worth more than
3 stars

charlotte, cario,
I have watched all 5 movies and plan on watching the next one which comes out in November. I also have read and re-read all of the books. I admit it was a little annoying that the edited stuff out of the 5th movie, but from a very informed insider (hint, hint) had said that they had to get to the main points and couldn't dawdle. It was amazing.
Brittani, neosho, mo
Okay...I have to say that I thought it was all right. There was not enough of Tonks (Natalia Tena) or Bellatrix (the amazing Helena Bonham Carter), and the plot was tampered with so much that anyone who had not read the books would have been very confused. After all, in the book, it was Umbridge who sent the dementors (never mentioned in the film) and it was Marie (Cho's friend), not Cho who betrayed the DA. Just my two cents
Helena, London, England,
I have fully enjoyed every book and have finished reading all 7. I read the Order of the Phoenix quite a while ago, but I remembered all the main points. In the movie, the main points were actually skipped, and my father hadn't even realized Sirius died because it had been far too quick. I felt the difference between this movie and the others is that this one just put scenes and faces to the story we have read while the others actually tell the story.
I felt the movie's problem was too much stuff to be told in too little time. Perhaps a two movie approach would have worked better? I had even felt the Goblet of Fire was rushed but not near as much as the Order of the Phoenix. I'd recommend they try the two-movie approach to the next two movies, or else they may just be more disappointments. On the bright side to them, selling 4 movies instead of 2? It would make everyone happier I'd think.
Stephanie, Ottawa,
I thought the movie cut off a lot of parts. Also, it bounced around and wasn't completely in order which made it really confusing. It wasn't really worth the money or the time. Don't go see it!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tina, Wilmington, Deleware
First, I m not a kid, I am a senior.
Second, I enjoy the Harry Potter Books.
Third, the Order of the Phoenix movie is not good. It should have kept to the book, even within the time constaints, this could have been done. By changing things, simple things, they chaned the whole tone of the movie,
Suzanne, Bradenton, fL
Well, I would like to know why every one trashs the movie when the harry potter movie and its propaganda sell millions of dollars, some people have to like it, i have yet to see the movie, but have seen all the others and have not been disapointed.
Mary, Manchester, USA/ CT
I agree that this film was poorly adapted from the silver screen. Yes, Mrs. Carter was underused as a truely diabolical and important villian. There was too much cut out and too much that should have been left at the brainstorming table. Introducing new camera angles and music as a character was unnecessary and above all irritating. Radcliffs acting was below par and the only things scary about the movie was Emma's scrunching facial expressions. It's making my eyes hurt right now, months later. I am disappointed that the studio wasted their shot at tru genious. Time has made it clear that we get no redos. The studio has left me wishing that there was the possiblity of a renig card in entertainment.

I thought the fifith harry potter movie was quite a dissapointment. Longest book, shortest movie. Best book, worst movie. What were teh script writers and the producers thinking when they made teh movie so short and stupid.
There should've been more action and the scenes at Grimuald place should've been been a lot more longer and not have skipped out so many things and messed around so many things.
I'm a reader and when i first read the books i was amazed. I'm only 14 and started reading them when i was 10. They were the first books i had ever read and i had already watched the first movie two years before. I was amazed and intrigued and watched it over and over. I can't watch the fifth movie very often because it's such a dissapointment... What were they thinking when they made it? I agree with Lee and say they should've added on an extra 15-30 min to make it more interesting
The final battle was too short, but the death was quite sad and made me cry.
But in the end.Go and see it
Poodle, Hobart, Tas
This movie was definetly the worst out of the Harry Potter movies.
The first thing I noticed, was the lack of music. All the other movies have been packed full of John William's pieces, which although not exactly moden, gave it a really nice magical feeling, which I think was completly lost in this movie.
Secondly, I think there was far too much attempted comedy in this film. When filch is putting up the degrees on a ladder, I think it just takes it way too far.
However, the thing that I think was the worst, was that there was not storyline! The camera was constantly hopping about for about 10 minutes, not foccussing on any one point put on about 6 at once, I can see that it must be hard to fit in 800 pages of book in a space of 2 hours, but come on, that was just stupid!
I think this movie had so much potential, but in the end, they managed to muck everything about it up..... even by giving the weasley's the typical 'bowl' haircut!
James, Colchester, England
I actually enjoyed this movie i saw it the opening day with my daughter and my younger sister and we all loved it we've been to see it 4 times since then too. I do agree that there are times when it seemed rushed and but it was still a great movie 20 more minutes or so wouldnt have hurt and it was very dramatic the memories coming back were very dramatic for me i wanted to cry when sirius was killed especially when they slow-motioned harrys reaction. The movie had so many different feelings from it i just loved it and would go see it again ofcourse i still believe HP&The Goblet of Fire is the best to date but HP&The Order of The Phoenix is still great #2
latasha, vista, usa/california
This movie felt like a cliff's notes version on fast forward. Every plot line felt very rushed, and the transitions were choppy. Surely, some stuff had to be cut, and I think they did good on choosing the more important plotlines. However, a bit more expansion on some of the characters and key plotlines would do wonders to giving the movie more depth and clarity. Another 15-30 minutes could have added a lot of important little details without making the movie excessively long.
But hey, it's Harry Potter. Despite its flaws, every fan should go see it. It's fun regardless. The final battle was way too short, but it's still very cool, and quite ruthless.
Lee, Chicago, IL
agreed.... there was far too much missing and even worse was that the story itself was sacrificed for "drama". the movie was just plain bad. I was very dissappointed that all of a sudden the movie turned into a story about harry and his "love" for his friends and family when all that happens in the movie is solely what we see about harry and nothing about anyone he actually "loves". What a terrible contrast in plot.
dustin, Anchorage, alaska
This was by far the WORST of the movies. I didn't even make it through the first half an hour of the movie before being so disgusted that i stopped watching it. The plot differs so much from the book that it's like your watching a knock off of an already bad knock off of a real HP movie. Also the acting was so poor that i now refuse to watch any of the upcoming HP movies if they feature the same group of actors or if it is the same director. There was not one part of this movie that i can make a posotive comment about. Even the dialogue that was synced with the book was terrible and out of place. But to sum this movie up i would have just one word. Horrible.
tanner, redwood falls,
Disappointing summarizes the movie the best!
By-the-way, "KM, London, London" statements are as disappointing as the movie. "...Why can't some of these people tell the difference between a book and a dramatisation?..." Please! You can tell the Potter enthusiasts from those who are clueless.
Luchi Lynch, Ramstein AB, Germany
Nearly everyone has commented on the plot and the dialouge differing from the books... this wasn't the only let down in the movie. The way in which the dialouge was delivered was awful with the exception of a handful of characters - if Alan Rickman's Snape and a few others had more to say then Harry Potter may have seem well acted... unfortunately Harry speaks the most; and Radcliffe simply doesn't have any charisma on or off-screen.
Harry Potter 5 didn't say as much as it should have, but honestly, would it be worth watching if it had - when the acting and execution was nothing short of poor.
Jonathan Ward, Ingelby Barwick,
I HATED this film. It is definately the worst of the Harry Potter movies. Besides the fact that the movie was missing well over half the book, David Yates and Michael Goldenberg changed almost all the scenes that were in the movie. They barely left anything untouched which is what makes me the most angry. If I were to state everything wrong with it, we would be here for hours.
Take for example, the Department of Mysteries scenes. They removed all the other rooms except for the curtain. And in the scene where Dumbledore arrives to fight Voldemort. First off, Voldemort NEVER knocked Dumbledore to the ground. Second off, the whole thing where Harry was talking to Voldemort who was possessing him never happened and it was so stupid.
The film was so bad that I could barely stay in my seat for the full 138 minutes. Yates and Goldenberg did a horrific job turning the book into a movie and its unfortunate that they have the chance to do the same to the sixth book. It's really very sad.
Jackie, Paramus, New Jersey
The one thing that totally ruined the film was the storyline itself; the film did not follow the book at all. I was extremely disappointed, it was a waste of a movie the the actors and actresses, as well as the special effects, which were the only great assets to the film. Lets just hope film 6 and 7 are better adaptations.
Nikki, London, UK
The movie could be longer. Honestly, who haven't read the book, didn't understand any of it. Too much important things were left out.
Carol, São Paulo, BRAZIL
Leaving things out, from book to film, is inevitable. However,
cutting out scenes from the film simply to make room for added scenes, which never occurred in the story, is truly unfortunate: Filch knowing where the door to the room of requirement was, everybody knowing where the door was, moving the dementor attack to a tunnel off a playground out in the middle of some stark empty field, Umbridge being clever enough to break into the Room of Requirement, no jinx on the DA list, Harry battling bravely alongside the Oredr while his DA companions cower.....
Added to the important things left out - Dobby, Kreacher, the mirror, Sirius' death, Dumbledore's explanation, etc, and, for once it would be nice to have the correct characters speak their own lines, rather then stand and watch other characters say them instead. Added foolishness is inexcusable when important plot points are left out, or shoved rudely into place. JK writes fantastic dialogue - why not use more of it
Craig, Dayton, Ohio
I absolutely loved the film but the book was sooo much better! Im on the 6th one now n its taking me ages to read em all but they are all so amazing. As i read the book before the film i could understand what was going on but i think lots of other ppl were kinda lost. Howeever the film was beautiful n the actors are all so talented! love ya all xxxxxxxx
Jenny, Manchester,
Considering the book is the longest so far I think they did a great job to keep the movie bouncing along at a fair old pace. It is a shame that so much was cut out however the film would have been 5 hours long and Sooooooooooooooo drawn out. I have seen it twice at the cinema and have enjoyed it both times. Roll on HP & the half blood prince. Good to see Emma Watson eyebrows not overacting as much either haha
Andrew, West Kirby, UK
The movie left put too many stuff but overall it was cool..i can understand the producers point of view of shortening the movie to make the plot more understandable because otherwise people who have never read the books would not understand the movie, only those who have read the books, so they're trying to please both the readers and the non-readers...and that might be a challeng
omar, chicago, il
I think Harry Potter is the best movie i have ever watched! The whole thing was absolutely fantastic! It''s a must watch for everybody!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Diana, Nairobi, Kenya
While I agree that it's impossible to include everything from the book into the movie, I do think that WAY TOO MUCH was left out. The movie itself was good, but if you're a big fan of the books, it is disappointing. The actors are incredible, and if you only watch the films, and don't read the books, then you'll probably enjoy the film. I myself wonder why the longest book, is the shortest HP film. The new pirates movie was a whole hour longer than OOTP and I think they could have extended the film by at least another 45 min and included, what I think, were important scenes that were left out. I really hope the next film doesn't butcher the book as much as this film does.
Beverly, Davie, Florida
Wow how much do you want to change/ leave out? I mean what is up with the way moody opend up grimmand place! that charm has some significance in the books to come. The deluminater was not mentiones either and that has a part in the last book. Kreacher said near to nothing in the film another important part. Malfoy completely left out. How the room of require ment was described totaly differant to film. Cho did not give away there DA place either. proball the most important in my view the room of requirement was cursed open. How in gods name did they manage that. Also i am pretter sure sirius was supposed to die by going through the veil not a killing curse.
BK, Chorley,
Well after waiting a year for the film what can i say , bitter disapointment i think coins the phrase, although there were some good parts and some funny parts the overall impression was that it just went round and round and didnt go anywhere! gone is the special sparkle from the previous films, in fact i just wanted it to end as i couldnt put up with another minuite of it. It is nothing like the book! and in my view the director has missed a great opportunity to make a great film (do you think they should remake it !!!) my 15 year old son who is Harry potter crazy fell asleep!!!! we were bored bored bored!!! what happened to the elves!!! and the fun!!!
malcolm, great Yarmouth, norfolk england
to quote: worst. movie. ever. wholly disappointing. lame gag lines and a poorly structured plot. the two of us counted four-and-a-half funny parts and an hour of painful moments. for any of you with fond memories of the good-ole' simpsons: just buy dvds of the sitcom.
joe, bellingham, wa
Why can't some of these people tell the difference between a book and a dramatisation? You've got your imagination to conjour up the written action - use it and stay away from the movie if you want every comma! This was the best of the HP dramatisations and thank goodness a good deal of JKR's overwritten waffle was trimmed - it actually stood up on it's own as a single entity and would (apart from maybe the opening) not have confused a newcomer. Sadly, I do have to agree that the wizard fight at the climax was not what I hoped it would be but that's because I'd imagined something rather different.
KM, London, London
I believe that this was the worst HP movie yet. It was very anti climatic, a lot of the important information was remade a different way and the movie insulted the book. Yates did a horrible job; I just hope that he can pull it together before the next movie and not make a fool of himself again.
The graphics in the movie were great, don't get me wrong... it was a phenomenal movie, but storyline wise, I am ashamed of it! I hope that the next on is better and they focus more on achieving greatness with script out of the book than with the sound and graphics....
Meghan, Spartanburg, Sc
Alike many of you have said, I was also truly disappointed with the film. So much was missed out, and even though the film's duration was 2 hrs 18 mins long, it seemed as if I had only watched half a film. There was no real climax that really stuck out in my mind. The ending was poor and seemed very unfinished. I appreciate that the film was very magical, unique with great graphics, but unlike the first Harry Potter film, this one just simply didn't fulfil.
Hopefully, the next film; the Half Blood Prince will not have so many things missed out as the book didn't disappoint one bit, and this would ruin the whole story altogether.
Milo, Dorset, England
I loved the movie. I think it was the best one to date. I would go see it again.
Tiff, South Bend,
To the person commenting on the "weeping willow"...it's the WHOMPING willow. And this is a MOVIE...not the book...so it's a different medium altogether. People need to get over thinking that a movie will exactly replicate the book on which it's based. If it bothers you that much, stick with the books.
Aderryn, Rochester, NY
Contrary to other people's comments, I thought Harry Potter and the order of the pheonix was awesome. In fact I saw it not once but twice. It seems today that the publics expectations are over the top and expect too much. Yes there were parts of the story missing, but that did not have any implications in terms of spoiling the film. I cannot wait for The next movie. Bring it on Harry Potter and the half blood prince.
Nicola Whelan, Barry, Wales, UK
You know what? As someone who despises the HP series I faced this film with some trepidation. But as it featured the wonderful Ms Staunton and the irrepressible Helena Bonham-Carter I gave it a go - and I was presently surprised. The general quality of this film was much higher than its predecessors, mainly thanks to the stalwart work by the deliciously nasty Staunton, the chilling Fiennes and the sadly underused Helena Bonam-Carter. I must also say that in the short space between Goblet of Fire and this latest outing that Emma Watson has forgotten how to act, and Radcliffe has finally, and after a long and excruciating wait, found some vestige of talent. He does a good job. Perhaps he stole all of Watsonâs talent, who seemed to deliver all of her lines in the same breathless excitement as though her newly acquired bust had become to heavy for her. A shame really, a sore thumb in a generally enjoyable movie.
adam, cardiff,
i was dissapointed too. i loved the book and hated to see it completly massacred on screen. absolutly nothing happens until the cool 10 minute action at the very end. the rest of the movie is a drag until that really cool finale. i liked umbridge; the actress who played her was great. i like goblet of fire better. overall i was extremely dissapointed. i would only see it again in hopes that it would be better the second time
Mark, Greer, South Carolina
dull
a poor effort and a waste of talent and material............
and this from a fan of the series.
DAVS, KIRKCALDY , UK
Honestly I was dissapointed, but not totally. I was dissapointed because the oop movie showed a lot of events from the book but scarcely explained them. For instance, Kreacher, Grawp, and even Hagrid were barely included in the film. Also many sequences from the book were either left out or altered alot just so Rowling`s masterpiece could be turned into a 120 min. action packed blockbuster! I think that Daniel acted brilliantly, especially at being angry, and that the
Dursleys were terrible. But I think that the films biggest problem was that almost every sequence was really dark and deppresing to me. On the other hand, the fith installment has to be dark considering the state of things in the wizarding world. (Plus the graphics were awsome!) All in all, a good film for the inexperienced harry potter fans but not to those like me who pay attentiln to the storyline.
Sean, Flint, TX USA
I just saw the movie tonight. It was OK. I was not as impressed with this movie as I was the with the others. I also can't believe this is the LAST MOVIE?!? I am disappointed to have read that in the paper. Not a real great ending to the running of HP movies. Thumbs down.
Samantha Bradbury, Valrico, FL
and not even ONE GHOST appear in this movie...I wonder where they have been in this movie...and Ron has never been an important character in this movie. and harry breaks up with cho chang becoz of her telling umbridge about DA? no quidditch!no prefects!and fred and george didnt even have any dialogue during their last revenge to umbridge....very disappointing...
Omellete, Kuala Lumpur,
hey well i've read all the books, and seen all the movies. i hear everyone complaining about this last movie how they added stuff let stuff out and changed stuff. well get over it lord of the rings portray was way worse and at least with hp Rowling saw the script saw the movie and approved of everything so you hardcore fans that disagree with the whole movie things, your writer is against you, and another thing i'm sorry but some of the stuff that was in the book would completely stupid and wouldn't make sense in a movie, thats why the movie has to change things, and the whole quidditch bit is dumb and adds no story whatsoever i'm glad that they pretty much took that out of the movies, all in all i really like the books and the movies and when i watch the movies i take in the stuff that i read from the book as well making it an A+ accomplishment, well thats my say, all you hp nerds need to really rethink your lives. Bring on deathly hallows!!!!!!!!!!
Tyler, Fresno, USA California
This is by far the worst HP Movie yet!!! I was very disappointed as most of the movie was dragging and I am acutely aware whenever they introduce a new scene. In any other HP movies, I barely noticed the scene transitions. IN this movie, I could not even connect the relevance of one scene to the next. No timing at all!
Also, what happened to the important scenes? Tonks never got much exposure, the full length prophesy made by trelawney was not even mentioned (so we'll know that it could both refer to harry and neville, thus the ? sign on the prophesy),the centaur teacher was left out, no quidditch in this movie,no ron and hermione being made prefects, noe xplanation regarding kreacher and worst of all: WHAT HAPPENED TO THE GOLD STATUES IN THE MONISTRY THAT CAME TO LIFE AND PROTECTED HARRY WHILE DMBLEDORE BATTLES VOLDEMORT??
Also, Sirius' death was rather dispapointing. He and Bellatrix was supposed to have a go at each other! And the order vs death eaters battle was way too short!
Jade, Sydney,
"MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!!"
So I finaly have seen the movie, what a disapointment. What with all the changes from the book, I would hate to see the movie go back to the confusion of the third movie. Why is it that harry does not use the crucio curse?, What is ron doing knoing about grawp? And the weaslys leaving was NOT AT ALL like the book, I mean, it was supposed to happen
so that harry gets to speak with sirus at Grimland place, and that did not happen, Moddy should of given harry the picture of the pheonix, and were did sirus' mirror go? The acting was terrific, and the little bit that we got to see of Malfoy was great. With the loss of what i loved of the forth film, I hope that the 6th movie will have a better run at than the film I saw. With all in all, the movie was a block buster hit, and was a great movie, if you didn't read the book.
Vincent Laurin, St-Constant, Canada
Like many other harry potter readers iam disappointed with this installment. It has strayed too far from the book, some details have been totally changed when there was no need to. Why change it so that cho let slip about the DA when seeing her friend covered in spots would have been much better. Also what happened to the dementors!
Where has all the quidditch gone? The storyline with ron audtioniong for the team etc shows development in relationships, there is no hint of this at all.
I think its rediculous to have tried to fit the longest book into the smallest film. The film just scrapes the surface of what it could be .They could have easily added on an extra 30mins, allowing them to squeeze in those extra scenes that are desperately needed.
Overall, i felt there was no obvious plot and it all seemed a bit vague, + you seemed to just end up at the ministery with no trail leading to it. But... the effects are brilliant as always + is very good so long as you didnt read the book.
Bryan, hertfordshire, england
People, get out, it is not possible to put all in the movie! I think this is the worst Potter movie, but because of what it showed. Luna is Ok, Umbridge and Fiennes were perfect, DB showed all the distance of Harry. I liked the way they handled Cho/Harry, so it won't go to next movie. Bellatrix is the best and I hope we see more of her. Daniel was astounding! But Hagrid and Gawp was stupidity! Why to put Kreacher in it without any explanation? The Trelanwey was not necessary as quidditch was not and wasn't there. The movie moved from scene to scene without any link between them and where was the passion. The biggest scene in the book, Harry and Dumbledore talk, in which Harry knows that DB loves him as a son, was reduced to a six word scene with level zero lof Dumbledores's office destruction. Harry was so resigned of everything... no shout, no angry. Daniel was perfect, just for the record, and I don't blame David, because he seems fine and has to work with what the screenplay.
Branci, Aracaju, Brazil
I question the people who say this film was faithful to the book. How is a film that left out so much important information faithful to the book? Also, many parts in the film that were shown were completely changed. TRUE fans of not just the movies but the book as well would be extremely disappointed. In my opinion, this was the worst film yet. Its understandable that theyd leave some parts out but come on there was just too much left out. As well the film was way to short, considering how long the book was, the film should have been way longer. Some say that if the film was any longer no one would want to watch it. Correction, real fans would prefer a longer more accurate film rather than short and inaccurate. Also TYLER you say that anyone who thinks that this film was poorly done is mentally deficent, you are completely wrong! For one i predict you didnt even read the book so how would you know what was wrong or right. All in all this film was NOT faithful to the book!
Angela , AB, Canada
personnaly i think the movie was just that a big flashy movie made to impress the less interested. nut to the people like me who really love the books it was a disapointment.they left out way to many things from the book some times they even altered the story to fit the movie easier and they even blew a hole in hogwarts which any dedicated reader would know is impossible. i think that when they make the next movie they need to get a reader that has actually read and enjoyed the book
ryan vankuren, redford, united states
I have to agree I was disappointed. I had read the book a year ago and, after seeing the movie, wondered if I had forgotten how the story was really told. I had not. The movie tried to get too much in and only hit on a lot of things for too short of time. I would rather have seen fewer scenes follow through completely than the bits and pieces that flew by. This book had the opportunity to show the big changes in Hogwarts and the kids but it didn't.
Kathy Amelio, ventura, california
i thought the movie was amazing and was as faithful as it could be for a box office hit
JOE, BIRMINGHAM,
Hated the 5th movie. The only good acting came from Rupert Grint who was finally allowed to portray Ron according to JK Rowlings book and not the screenwriter's/ director's somewhat delusional version of Harry Potter books. Really, how much screenwriting talent do you have to have. Buy the 5th book, take a pen to it, and edit away. There's no need to make up stuff that's not in the book and give precious movie time to it instead of the original book storyline. I go to the Harry Potter movies to see JK Rowling's books brought to the silver screen, not the screenwriter's version. The movies get progressively worse. I hated all of the acting, with the exception of Rupert's. Not because the cast has no talent, but because they had awful material to work with. The movie was approx. 120 minutes long with about one different scene every 2 minutes. It wasn't a movie, just some original storybook lines along with made up lines to fill up time and space. I am very disappointed in this film. They didnât follow the story line. I realize OOP is about 900 pages. I know some of the sub-plots can be, if not removed completely then alluded to. I know there were some actor/studio/money problems. But what you end up with is a very watered down version of the book, with things that were wrong and others that were just thrown in. Worst of all, if youâd never read OOP, you come away, as my goddaughter puts it âboard and disappointed.â You donât get the subtleties, a better understanding of the wizarding world, and donât even get me started on the Ministry Headquarters (did you see that fountain?). The whole point of showing Snape in a better light here is so you get a real feeling of betrayal in HBP. But you wonât get that if you only saw the movie. Foreshadowing is OK, but when you miss the point altogether, itâs bad. But I must say Imelda Staunton was the absolute highlight of the whole film. I hated her character, as I should have.
S. McClellan, Alexandria, LA
I have taken the idea that the books and the films are two different things with similarities. I think that by comparing the two it detracts from the films. If you see them as seperate productions then the films become much more enjoyable.
Paul Nash, Middlesbrough,
The build up and marketing to the fifth Harry Potter film was both intense and justified.
The acting was superb and with regard to the younger cast gets better with each film (lets not forget the acting from the first instalment). I don't think Imelda Staunton could have done a better job of portraying Professor Umbridge she was flawless, I hated her more than Lord Voldemort. The scenery was spectacular especially the ministry of magic, it was exactly how I imagined it.
Granted there was pieces of information that were in the book that didn't make into the film but they weren't vital pieces of information and so far not one of the films has been exactly to the book, because if they had been people would only complain the film was too long which would have been even more true regarding this book as its the largest so far. I loved this film and would watch it over and over again without a doubt. It made me even more excited about the release of the 7th book!!!

After reading some of the comments from both british and america's point of veiw, i have to say i am very dissapointed with the film. It veered so far away from the book, i think the only people who actually liked the film will not have read the book. Some of the vital parts were missed and rupert and emma's roles were barely seen. What happened to ron and hermiony been prefects? Harry george and fred been banned from playing? ron and ginny joining the team? seeing nevils parents in st.mungos? Prof M + Hagrid ending up in st.mungos after been attacked by umbridge? the clean up in blacks house? blacks mother? harry didn't read snapes mind, he fell in the pensiv and saw what happened with his father, cho didn't grass on DA it was her friend who then came out in spots on her face from the jinx put on the partchment! if the same director is doing the next film i will not see it unless he takes into account its fans of the book who will be most critical + expect a true film, not his vision!
Gemma Clarke, Knottingley,
Hi all,
I've not seen the film yet but despite the fierce way many who have read the book criticise this film none of them can spell. Thus this indicates to me that J.K.Rowling's outings have not educated the readers in the use and writing of the English language at all - learn something and stop getting bogged down in the little details of a non-significant story which will mean little to you in a year or to after the final book has been read.

I was very disappointed with the movie. The more I think about it, the more inconsistent it seems. Those who think it was the most faithful adaptation have actually left me dumbstruck. This is because even the most ardent supporters of the movie still agree that it was not very similar to the book, more like "VERY VAGUELY suggested by the Harry Potter Characters". And to say that a non-reader of the HP series would follow the movie is just plain lying. Lets be honest. If you liked it, fair enough. Leave it at that. Don't defend the poor writing and interpretation.
As Sally said most ppl don't agree but the first 2 films were the most faithful. True the books were shorter, but this also raises the question...why was OOTP the shortest in the series of movies released? Wouldn't it make sense to make the longest book the longest movie? Thus putting in more details.
This movie also didn't just leave out important and interesting parts our it also change quite a bit of the key points.
D.K. Guantai, Nairobi, Kenya
I thought the movie was the worst Harry Potter movie yet. They made it so short, and a lot of things werent in the movie. =/ It seems like the director was in a rush t make it or something compared to the other movie. Hopefully the next movie will make up for everything.
Polly, Bay Area, Ca
Couldn't wait for the end.
Nicole, Great Falls, USA/ Mt
I think that everyone who has made negative comments about this film are...how should I say this...mentally deficient. This was the best film so far out of the series. I can't believe that people are complaining about it! This was the first film that didn't use STUPID special effects and situations that weren't even in the book in order to entertain the, apparently, even more stupid audience. The actors are clearly getting better, though they aren't the greatest...and I am afraid to say that I don't think that Daniel Radcliffe will ever be a GOOD actor, but I don't think that they were as bad as they have been. Not that there weren't a few disappointments to me (eg the statues, the hospital, Marietta, etc.) but I think that this was a really good installment in the series. So for those of you out there who are pondering whether or not to see this movie...go ahead.

i love all the HP books, and i think they are all amazing and have such detail in them. but i was dissapointed but OOtP, i thought it missed out loads of essential information, and there didn't seem to be enough about the characters and the detail that is needed. i found that watching it, it seemed that they were only filming what they HAD to film, there didnt seem to be much talking and although it's meant to be the 'darkest' of them all, it was missing essential funny parts. i also found that the actors seemed very motionless to begin with, and they seemed to get to the point too soon and didn't seem to flow as well as the other films. I sencearly hope then next film is better and expains more.
sam, London, England
I, as an avid potter fan who has the deathly hallows pre ordered and intends to be the first through the book shop doors on july 21, am very disappointed. What happened to the song "weasley is our king"? No one who hasnt read all the books will know that the red-head that was with the minister in dumbledores office was Percy Weasley. What happened to Fred and Georges portable swamp? I dont think that i will bother going to see the next one now. It was an incrediably inaccurate portrayal of a fantastic novel. That movie smelt like last years cheese.
Sharon, langhorne creek, Australia
I am extremly dissapointed with this film, i have waited such a long time for it having loved the books and previous films, but this was this biggestlet down. SO much important things where left out, major jumps in the story, incorrect order of events, things changed around, forgotten complatly and some very wrong things added that are not even in the book!
Where was the weasley swamp, the wizard hospital, the statue in the ministry coming to life, the events in the black house????
such a let down, then even changed the station, how can you chnage the station!!
The biggest mistake was that Harry and the others hear the profficey in the minstry in this film, so so so wrong, it smashed after a major chase with it and the death eaters no one hears it, Dumbledore shows Harry wha it said in his pencieve in the office at the end, where its reveled no one can live while the other survies, harry hides this secret throughut the next book but in this film its revealed to all! SO WRONG!
Sarah Winter, London,
I agree with the people who said that the movie was terrible. The special effects were good, yes, but the acting and plot, oh my god...i don't even have the words to describe how awful it is.
They did not just cut some things off from the book, which is understandable since the book was long, but they ADDED and CHANGED some things that were not supposed to be added/changed. Like, I thought Marrietta was the one who blabbed about the army, not Cho. Maybe WB would think these changes to be essential so that the movie would be unique in it's own way, but i think the changes were unnecessary and obvious, and certainly affected the whole movie in a bad manner.
The acting was dissapointing. Some say that Dan, Emma and Rupert are improving, I couldn't disagree with you more. Sometimes i think that the three kids they used to be when they were on Sorcerer's Stone were better actors than they are now. In ootp, I really don't sense their passion, or friendship. the other characters were dull.
Kris, CDOC, Philippines
omg....i can't tell you how much this movie sucked. they left out everything. this was suppose to be the mvoie where you get really confused about snap...and think he is a good guy because of the way he acts in the order. if you didn't read the book you will be confused you will ask what the significance of them being in the ministry is. you were suppose to see more of the ministry, more of the house elves, no dobby dude he was funny, no sirius, no lupin, no tonks, we didn't get to meet the longbottoms, nor did we see gildaroy lockheart in the hospital along with mr. wesealy. we didn't see sirius' mother, oh and raise your hand if you notice their mistake with that stupid quill they used for punishing harry the blood was suppose to come from the hand he was wrighting with not the other one. he was suppose to talk to sirius before umbridge cought him, the twins had no part at all and they were suppose to, barty crouch jr. was suppose to get teh dementors kiss in the end. nothing to it
Rae, Garfield Hts,
I was so mad about this movie i waited and waited for this movie to come out and when i saw it i was so upset...they left so much out. a lot of the stuff they left out is stuff they needed in there. they left out how harry sees his mother stand up for snap...they didn't show that and left out blacks big part. also you are suppose to see tonks through out the movie and you don't...and most people don't even remember seeing her in the beging of the story. she was one of my favorite people in this story and she had no part in this story. loona lovegood was suppose to be someone geeky but she was way to cute for her roll. i think they should go and redo this movie.
Jessica, Garfield Hts,
Actually, I enjoyed this film more the all the rest. I thought the acting had progressed to a level where the range of (most) of the emotions were believeable. Gary Oldman is always a treat to watch and I enjoyed his moments with Daniel Radcliffe, however brief. The movie seemed a lot more grown up and there was so much more intrigue and emotion. I loved the Dark Arts meetings and the battle scene in the Ministry at the end was superb. This book was 800 pages, so how in the heck is anybody to render a film faithfully out of a book of that legnth? I thought it was superbly done.
Mae Leal, London, UK
This film is incredibly disappointing. How could anyone possibly mess up something this good? They should have trashed the film while they're still reviewing it and make a new one. This is such an insult to J.K. Rowling. The director clearly didn't even bothered to read the book because the film looks like the person who made it "skimmed his way to the book, 900 pages and all" and call it harry potter and the order of phoenix. The director didn't even put too much attention to the order and their meetings held at blacks place. WORST film..
curly tops, PH,
This realy was the most dissapointing film yet. It seems like they are realy rushing to get them out now. All the way through i was thinking have any of them read the book as so much was left out.
They only put kretcher in as J.K Rowling insisted as he's going to play a big part in the last book.
Jordan, scarborough, uk
I have to agree with these comments, i felt that they left out such necessary details and made the film seem very rushed, i could list off about ten things that could have been included in the film without adding any extra time, why didnt we see dobby? why was kreacher in about two seconds of the film? what about the actual explanation of the prophecy??!!! argh!why werent we shown the full extent of the arthur weasley incident? hang on, what about the fact that neville isnt as rubbish as everyone thought, in the film they did nothing to explain this! I appreciate that it is a film and cannot include every detail from the book, but..
i had built the film up too much probably and expected it to be something amazing, I think the only film I have enjoyed was the goblet of fire, because again even though they missed out alot of the detailing, i enjoyed the way they portrayed voldemort.
all in all i was thoroughly disapointed and i dont think they did judgement to such an amazing bok

I thought the movie was disappointing, not slightly but majorly disappointing. I can't believe the reviewers who say that it was the most faithful adaptation. They must not have read the book because even the most ardent supporters of this new movie admit that it was very choppy. Arguing for arguments sake is such a waste of time.
We all understand that they could not adapt the entire book(that isn't even a issue to contend)
However, if the book was abridged it could be abridged to about 1/3 of its size(while keeping all details)...most of its bulk comes from description among other stylistic devices. The plot is much shorter than the bulky 790 pages.
The main problem I had was not that they cut things out, its more that they put in quite a lot of useless stuff that wasn't in the book(this newly added material did not add at ALL to the movie). They also changed quite a bit of the details. Which didn't really help the movie.
The first 2 movies were the most faithful I think.
D.K. Gunatia, Nairobi, Kenya
this was the worst yet :| it was like start-hogwarts-army-fight-end nothing that enjoyed me of the book was in there i never thought the films were disrespectin the books... but this just was a direct attempt at the books life 0.o
K, The netherlands,
In itself it's not a terrible film but I would hardly call it a good one. But as a Harry Potter film it's absolutely horrendous.
I realise they had to make cuts but why the changes they messed with the storyline far more than was actually neccessary.
As for the acting it felt like all the emotion had been sucked from the film and all the actors instructed to deliver their lines deadpan.
This was true even of the adult actors where was Uncle Vernon's fury he seemed barely irritated at discovering his son had been attacked.
Mcgonagall was used twice and seemed disinterested
As for Harry you call that yelling!
I said after the 4th that i wouldn't bother watching another movie and only went to see this one because I had heard it was better. Sadly I was mistaken and shan't be tempted back to watch either of the final installments. I shall stick to the books in the future.
Louise Johnson, Peterborough, United Kingdom
This has go to be the worst HP movie. Its missed everything!! What happened to Quiddetch? and malfoy? he had no part in this at all! The worst part i though though was when the directer made stuff up. Like Herminoe and Grawp, they weren't supposed to like him. And dumbledore was totally awful. he was so bland and you could never hear emotion in his voice. i know this book was long, but how do u expect people to follow the story if u just keep introducing new plots every five minutes.
mikki, aurora, IL
In my view, the fifth film is absolutely HORRIBLE. It's not the acting at all, but the script. All they have to do is follow the book and the movie would be amazing. Why change something that is already awesome? This movie left out so much detail and changed too much, by the end I was furious. Not to mention I really don't see how anyone who hasn't read the books could have possibly understood half of what was going on due to the lack of expaination. The only thing I can give this film credit for is capturing the darker aspect of the book. The best thing that can happen for the last two movies is giving the director's seat back to Chris Columbus. Many people disagree, but the first two films were by far the best. They followed closely to the books, and that's all I ask for. Not to mention the actor who played Dumbledore in the first two films was perfect for the role, and the Dumbledore in the last three fims is a disgrace to the character. I only hope they don't get worse.
Sally , Birmingham, AL
I am disappointed not at the film but at the numerous comments complaining about this wonderful film. I loved it from start to finish, gripping, emotional and truly fantastic.
R. Downer, London,
(Book Reader Review) THIS WAS ABSOLUTELY THE WORST MOVIE EVER. I sat in the theatre with my sister with my hand over my mouth to keep from yelling. I have never been so disappointed. They took the longest book and turned it into the shortest movie in the entire series. With the amount of CRUCIAL information that they left out, I don't know if I want to go see the 6th movie. WB should be ashamed to have their name on this film, and J. K. Rowling should be ashamed to be associated with it in any way shape or form. The director and producers should never get jobs again. They took a wonderful series and drove it into the ground so far I don't know if it will ever recover. My only advice to them is, Read the book next time, it just might help.
Mary, Romeo, MI
The film should have been entitled Haryy Potter, without "the Order of the Phoenix". They seemed to be missing. "order of the phoenix is a secret organization against you-know-who" and they leave it at that. The thing is almost all the other characters could have remained nameless, Neville Longbottom still remained isolated, bellatrix Lestrange's significance in the story was never explained, and most of the movie remained uninteresting. Even my mother, who has never had as much as touched a Harry Potter book in her life, hated it. I just don't get why they had changed their director half-way through finishing the whole series, and giving the responsibility of bringing to life the most important book of the series to someone who has never experienced directing a full-blown two-and-a-half hour film.
Starr, Manila,
I agree with a previous poster who said it lacked passion. There was no feeling from the beginning when mrs. figg looked almost catatonic, when she was supposed to be flipping out, and the mr. dursley was too calm, he was supposed to get angry too and try to throw harry out of the house. I kind of expected a condensed version of the film, but they took out all the things I was waiting for like st. mungo's, the portrait of Sirius' mom, and QUIDDITCH, that was supposed to be ron's shining moment! And it WAS important to the plot because It showed how unfair Umbridge was when she took it away. I just think another half hour would have helped a great deal.
James M, Marietta, Georgia, USA
Have just seen the movie and feel very disappointed. Having seen the trailers I thought wow! it's going to be great. So much of the integral story was missing. Anyone not reading the book would have to be thinking 'what was that all about!'
I thought the actors were great and are growing with every film, it was just the depleted material they had to work with that let them down. Here's hoping the producers of the next movie take note and keep more to the storyline or what's the point?
Looking forward to the Deathly Hallows in an effort to cheer me up!
Julie BP, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England
Exuse me but the flim was not dissapointing it was excellent the best fllm yet . The acting was brilliant all the actors have devolped alot. I thought the best scenes from the book were in it. The Ministry fight was amazing the special effects were out of this wolrd im in to media and all things flim. Order of the Phoenix gets 5 stars from me no affence yh but all you people who were dissapointed i fink your all really sad. im 18 i saw the 1st film wen i was 12, and i was dissapointed with goblet of fire but they made up for with this. god you americans don't no what british flims are. i've seen it twice and will probally see it again if i can its brilliant. and emma watson is fit. Also fred and georges breakout from hogwarst was magical literally
liam, wellingbrough , uk
I thought this movie was awful. Not only was it highly unfaithful to the book, but rather somewhat... boring as well. I couldn't wait for it to be over. I believe this is the worst Potter film, yet.
Felicia, California,
I think that the new film totally left out at least half of the book. It seems as if the movie was just "Ok we're here at Hogwarts! We are forming an army! I Shall have order! *fight fight fight* The end!!!" They should put some blasted detail in a likeness of the books at least! It infuriates me, this new movie and if the next one is just as bad, I'll be very dissapointed
Shannon Sweeney, Florence,
I thought the film was fun yet the production value was not that great -They should have spent more time at the start of the film setting up the story with more detail -- they could have introduced the new characters like the book did in the kitchen-- it would have taken five minutes of time - - They could of given a more detailed description of the order itself as well they could have left out grawp and just had hagrid explain him instead of wasting film time. For me the transitional details that were small were needed to make the film less vague.-- it lacked that special energy the others films had. The film seemed to beg the question why bother -- the script seemed bad not the actors - they are the best in the business yet it was painful to watch them. The scene with harry and writing lines should have made us squirm - it did not - the way they lit dumbledore was not dramatic at all -- it seemed like a made for TV film fun yet something missing .
dl benedict , tampa , florida
(Hem, Hem.) Those who liked the Order of the Phoenix book will have mixed opinions and reactions about the movie. The movie stays true to Harry, Ron, Hermione and Professor Umbridge's Characters but the movie is not 100% accurate to the book. Very important details were glossed over leaving the viewer to be somewhat dissappointed. None the less the special effects are spectacular and keep you hooked wondering what is going to happen next. If you've seen the other Potter Movies without reading the books you won't be dissappointed, but if you have read the books you will be surprised at the twists and turns given to some important characters in the movie. Without giving away too much detail I think Harry Potter fans should watch the move and judge for yourself.
Randy, State College, USA / PA
A lot of the comments about the the director and or screenwriter are fair. It was very disappointing with characters doing things that someone else and did missing points that follow on in the next book. Why was it cut so short? The ending did not portray the students very well at all. They fort a huge battle not just a few stunning spells. The build up in the fight was far to short and for such a mayor part of the movie Sirius's death? was poor with no fight build up. 3/10 I was saddened to here the same director has the next film already, with out facing his critics first. I am looking forward to the next book but not the next movie if it is going to be hashed up like that.
Ken Truman, Inverloch, Vic
OMG. I have read , enjoyed and own all of the books. I have seen, purchased and watched all of the previous movies. But the latest installment left me utterly upset. This was by far the worst movie out of the 7 part series. I hated it. The main parts of the movie were flat out missing or flipped around. Not cool. Yes the movie could not encompass the entire 870 pages that the book consited of, but it wouldn't hurt to have a bit more of the story in there.
Kareoleena, Encino, California
Half way through book three (PoA) I felt JKR had made an important and subtle change; no-longer writing for children, rather about them. Her tv interview at the time confirmed my perception.
OOtP was 200 pages too long as a book and if the screen writer was to honour the full richness of book 5, two films were necessary. Clearly this was not commercial. In the end the compromise was a tad disappointing, not for want of trying on the part of the special effects people!
I always thought Peter O'Toole would be cast to replace the late Richard Harris. Sir Michael Gambon is, I fear, less convincing in the role than is essential to prepare the ground for what is to come....we hope.
Finally, if JKR believes that killing off HP will prevent others from writing sequels, she is mistaken. The forums are full of discussion of Harry and Ginny and the Baby who Survived !!!
JKR once said " I'm not taking dictation..." .Real lives of real teens in her 'real time' books should reflect this.
Jeff, Winchester, Hampshire
I have to admit, there were many parts that were left out, that could have added more to the movie. But as a great Harry Potter fan I must admit that I enjoyed watching OOtP. And it was most definetly not a chore, or anything like that for that matter. It had much feeling of anger, and pain. It is supposed to be that way, and I must honestly say that it would be so much better if it could have a tiny bitty longer, and there was nothing about quidditch or Ron and Hermione becoming prefects, or that article Rita Skeeter writes for the Quibbler. The book itself was fairly long, well the longest so far.
But all in all, I loved it..
And as for the review, it does not sound much like a review at all.
Harry Potter and the order of the phoenix is a great movie!!
Maria, Grand Rapids, Michigan/ United Sates
The Harry Potter movies are supposed to be made for all of us Harry Potter fans. Not jut for the average movie goer, but for the avid fans who await patiently the new release of the movies and the books. If you were like me, and was SO EXCITED to see this new movie, you should have been VERY disappointed!! I don't care about the length, I care about the content. Shame on this director for destroying what should have been a great film...... I kind of dread the next one now. I don't want to be this disappointed next time.
Val, Gautier, United States
People, Michael Goldberg wrote the screenplay, so kindly stop blaming David Yates for the missing sections from the novel! Also JKR has a say in what can go / stay as well. I thought Dan Radcliffe's performance was heaps better than in the last couple of films and as said above, he was only 16 when the film was made, so naturally he doesn't have the life and acting experience of, say, Rickman, Staunton and Oldman. I saw his performance in "Equus" [front row] and he ws simply wonderful. I can't believe the jealousy and nasty comments made about him - poor kid, he is so lovely and genuine [and yes, I did meet him after the performance so I know!]
Jane Whitehead, Sydney, Australia
I just watched Harry Potter and the OOTP and i must say I was extremely disappointed. The movie was so inaccurate that the next two wont make any sense. So many important parts were left out. I understand that it had to be shortened but it was a sloppy job. I hope they do a better job on the next one. But even though the movie was terrible, the acting was excellent.
J. Morneau, BC, Canada
I myself am a huge fan of the books, movies and actors but unfortunately I have to agree that this movie was a great disappointment for me. I understand that they cannot fit everything that happens in the book into the movie, but they couldve done a way better job. Nonetheless the movie was very entertaining but it lacked a lot of vital information. If you didn't read the book you wouldnt know exactly what happened(i had to explain what happened to my siblings) which is definetly not good. Also knowing that this was the longest book you would think that the movie would be much longer than it really was. As well many parts in the film were changed, especially the ending which was a change that need not happen. Finally i found the film very choppy, there wasnt enough acting(as in speaking) and emotions shown in the film. Overall the film in my opinion didnt live up to its potential.
Angela , AB, Canada
PoA remains the most faithful adaptation so far, but I think this film comes close. The production design and cinematography values exceeded my expectations and the screenplay kept a lot more scenes in than I had expected. Although some changes are apparent there are still many cuts and alterations that I find were unnnecessary. Most of all I am still puzzled how the longest book has such a short running time. If kids are prepared to sit reading the books until they're finished then they are definitely capable of sitting through a 2-3 hour Harry Potter film. Wish WB could just see that.
Phil, Nottingham, UK
yesterday i saw the OotP. i was really a bit disapointed because a lot of great parts in the book were missing. it was really fast too. i know that PoAz was the fastest, but it was so much more enjoyable. the ending of this movie isn't great either. i am a huge fan of the harry potter movie serries and books, but after seeing the new movie it made me aske why.
the casts however were great, but the whole thing sucked. the problem is that it could be a great movie if they added more scenes and be more specific with the scenes they used. the book was soooo good that i don't UNDERSTAND what happen. for instance i don't know what happened to cho chang in the end of the movie because they didn't show.
This was the worst harry potter movie yet.
kim, floral park New York, USA
I admit I read the reviews before I saw the movie. I watched on the second day after opening. I walked out of the theatre with a big smile on my face. It was true to the book and I loved it! Thank you to the director and the cast I was so happy that the movie stayed true to the book. I get that the last movie was hard for people to follow who hadn't read the book. My advise. Read the book. I give it five stars!!
Tammy, Bakersfield, California
I thought it was an amazing movie, having read the fifth book about four times I noticed what was missing and what wasn't in the movie -- however I did /not/ think it was a big deal. Everything important was in the movie and J.K Rowling definatly has a say in what can be left out and what cannot. The special effects were beautiful, especially in the end. I've never seen such an intense battle like in OoTP.
I'm going again to see the movie tomorrow, and most likely a third time.
No Harry Potter fan can miss this!
Jake, Chicago ,
I went to see the movie at midnight and waited in line, im a avid reader and have seen all the movies, i think im just going to stop going because they left out entirely too much stuff to even compare with the book. I have no idea how anyone watching just the movies is following along, they did cut out scenes from book 1,2,3,4 in thier movies but #5 has been absolutly CHOPED! I guess it satisfies me being able to associate a face with a name on MOST characters because they even fail to introduce some people (winky) the centaur that replaces trelawny ect... For those who havent seen it go see it to satisfy your craving just dont expect it to even Come CLOSE to the book.

I've just seen this film and it is a thorough disappointment. So much of the book has been cut out it has been left disjointed and the characters are unable to develop in any sort of satisfactory manner. Where is St Mungos? Dobby? Any Quidditch? Any sort of flowing plot at all?
It was too short for the length of book, and an extra half an hour would not have hurt at all.
Even the battle at the end, where the cinematography was fantastic, fails to save this film from being the worst of them all.
Julie, Aylesbury,
I have read each HP book several times and I understand that it is impossible to include the amount of detail the books give in the movies. However, OOTP was TERRIBLE! Not only did they leave out tons of information, they blatently changed things. Things as simple as Cho being the one to rat out D.A., would it have killed them to employ the character Marietta?! I tried to remain impartial and watch the movie as an ignorant fan, and the movie jumped around so much, that if I had never read the books I would have no clue as to what the hell was happening. The movie loses all detail regarding the actual journey Harry is embarking. I suppose if you just want to see flashy cinemetography, then it is tolerable at best. Another thing, OOTP was the longest book, and I'm not sure on the stats, but was quite possibly the shortest movie. Very easily could've been a 3 hour movie and no one would've complained. All I have to say is send the director packing before he destroys another movie.

This is by far the most dissappointing film as of yet and not just Harry Potter; it's most dissappointing movie from book I've ever seen!! The importance of the prophecy was not clear; the fact that Voldemort didn't get to hear it - how upseting that was to him was not portrayed at all. Ron/Hermoine Prefects, Ron playing Quidditch wasn't even mentioned, neither was Neville mentioned in connection with the prophecy. Wasn't Bellatrix terrified of Voldemort and Harry never handed the prophecy to Lucious .. Please!! The kiss was way to long and what was the deal with the Dursleys? Mrs. Dursley looked a little "trampy" -- definately un-dursleyish--and where was the fantastic music and scenery from the other films? I own all the books, books on cd and movies, but I really don't want to pay for this movie when it's released. I honestly hope this director gets it together or gets fired before Half Blood. I can't stand to see another precious Harry Potter book slaughtered on film.

Having gone through the disappointing experience of reading one of the books just before seeing the film (Chamber of Secrets, I think), I have since resolved to avoid doing so. I can enjoy both film and books on their own merits, but can only truly enjoy the film by being able to avoid constant comparison. Therefore I have avoided the temptation to re-read OoP this time and hopefully will enjoy the movie when I see it tomorrow.
It is a shame when the studios feel an audience cannot cope with longer films - we managed it for Lord of the Rings. Perhaps a director's cut will become available on DVD.

hey the movie was not bad and though i'm disappointed at not seeing ron play his 1st match the movie was good and managed to cover all the main points in the book. it is indeed extremely fast paced but wat can b expected frm a movie based on a 900 paged book. i think the people have done a remarkable job.
as for the acting by the trio i think they've improved and given by the constant change in directors their style of acting is pretty good. the movie isnt supposed to be all happy as shown in the book and the director and the special effects team have more than lived upto my expectations of the film. i think its gr8. gonna watch it again. definately

I can't understand all these negative comments, especially in comparison to the previous films. The others deviated the MOST from the book, this one was by far the most faithfull. It didn't keep everything in, but that was to be expected, and it was very good at conveying the spirit and atmosphere. At least we weren't subjected to excrutiatingly long and unecesary chase sequences or quidditch matches. The young actors have grown, not enough by any means, but they're better here than they have been. This is the first HP film I've really enjoyed-all the others I went to becasue I love the books and grew up them, but was always dissapointed. They left out important points in favor of flash and comedy. This one had plenty of flash, but not at the expense of the story. If you don't like this one, fine-but don't try to say it's worse than the others which were at best tollerable and often downright irritating.

I am a huge potter fan and know the books inside out. Out of all the films i would have to say this one made the best stab at tring to capture the magic of the books. Although GOF was extremely well done as well. The fact that this book was so vast was always going to be a problem but thankful the most interesting and important points where covered, even if they had to change some scenes to make it happen. Thankful it was a better attempt than POA which left out half the plot, had nearly half and hour devoted to stuff that didn't really matter. Overall i would recommend the film even if your not a Harry Potter fan. It is moved beyond a childrens film and become a lot darker and mysterious.
Kathandra, Belfast,
I didn't like the film as i think they get worse every year! i do know that it gets more and more difficult to film, but they have made unnessesary changes in the 5th film which can also change how the characters are portrayed. for example, Cho Chang wasn't the one who sneaked.
Also that the impression of the DA wasn't that good becasue none of the teachers should have any idea it was there, but in the film it showed Filch sitting outside the door.
I disagreed with the changing the sequence of events becasue that made the film really confusing.
At the end, in the department of mysteries and the battle afterwards should have lasted longer, also the talk between HArry and Dumbledore at the end.
I also think Dumbledore (who was quite an important character in this book) wasn't shown that well.
Overall, i do not think the film is better than any of the other harry potter movies.
Sharon, Manchester,
I am a huge fan and OoTP was the first book I read and I loved it, i cried at the end even though I had no previous knowledge of any characters or storylines (that came later when I aquired all the books). The film was slow starting and missed out quite a lot. I am very aware that the film cannot have everything from the book but a lot of time was wasted. Dolores Umbridge was fantastic as were Sirius, Mr & Mrs Weasley, Tonks, Serverus and McGonagall to name but a few sterling performances however my main problem lies once again with Dumbledore, I feared after seeing Gambon's angry, shabby and agressive interpretation of the role that he would not be able to pull off the tender, sad and emotional moments in this and the sixth book. I t seems I was right as some of the best writing in the book, where Dumbledore admits his mistakes and his affection towards Harry, were just airbrushed out, this film has lost an emotional insight into a relationship that is servered in book 6.

I must say that I am in disagreement with those who were so dissatisfied with this film. Having read all of the books and seen all of the movies I found this one delightful and thought provoking from start to finish. Furthermore, knowing that it would be impossible to include so much material into a movie I came in with the expectation that it would be condenced to include only the most vital points, which I feel it did very well. The overall feel and theme in the book was maintained throughout the movie and I found the acting on the part of Daniel Radcliffe and Evanna Lynch absolutely brilliant.

I have just returned from the movie... and I have to post it for the first time... The movie was really really disappointing. It is not only cause the movie does not follows the lead or order of the book, but it lacks of passion. I mean, the last scenes that are suposed to be "action" are totally pation-less... I am really really disappointed of what J.K.R. is letting WB to do with the magic and fantasy of her books... Really, this is the worst movie of all the saga. If you go and see it, do not expect that much, it might not be what you all HP fans are waiting for.
Leslie , Mexico,
I thought the book for this movie was amazing. I LOVE Harry Potter and out of the 6 books so far this one was my favorite. Theres only 3 things from the book I thought they would have put into the movie and didnt...but it wasnt that disappointing!? The battle scenes were GREAT! They did a real good job on the effects. Keep in mind, movies are always different from their books.

I do say im not a huge fan on Harry Potter, but as my two children are i decided that i would read the books, which i thought where very entertaining. I also watched all the films.
Books are always completely different to the films though.
They try to make it different to give a suprise.
I disagree with all the bad comments.
As for the film i thought it was very interestng and equally enjoyable to watch as the previous ones.
My kids where excited to watch it and came out happier than ever.
I am overall very pleased with this film, and my family and i cannot wait until the next film is released.
The whole cinema room was full and not a whisper was made, everyone was so interested in the film it was un-beleivable.
I thought it was fabulous and if you want to watch a good film i recomend this one.

I am a big fan of Harry Potter, and I have to admit, this last movie was I have to say..dissapointing. It was one of the worst ones yet, and I feel cheated that I waited so long for the movie to finally come out, and then it was nothing as expected in a bad way . I don't know if they have a new director..etc., but you can tell something was missing.

It's a very good film and well made. I agree with all the previous comments, pros and cons. It's very compact making it hard to be followed for ones didn't read the book. As usual films are hard to produced as books were written. This film did still present all crucial points to get to the end, sometime with different presentation from the book. Last of all, where are Dumbledore's half-moon glasses? I still did enjoy the film very much. Well done, Mr. Yates and your team.

i was very dissapointed in this movie, most of the points of the book were missed or in the wrong order, alot wasnt explained and unless u read the book you wouldnt understand the plots and there is alot that is crucial to the 6th book not to mention what the 7th has instore, just look at the vanishing cupbored its not even mentioned in the film, most of the caracters personallity and passion and what makes them who they are have suddenly changed from how they have been portrayed in the past to now not to mention the magic and fear that voldermort gives off has been lost to humour and cheese, on whole must say my imagination is 100 times better than the directors. i hope the next film will be alot better and actually try to stick to the books story as J K Rowling has written, instead of having the hollywood spin that can ruin great films due to it being more concerned about affects than storybored. i think everyone could have sat for another 2 hours if it ment it was all loyal to book

I don't know who goofed - the director or the screenwriter, but the movie was very disappointing. Why do moviemakers always think if they change the story it makes it bet
