Dozens of youngsters did battle in The Times National Su Doku Championships. Oliver Garner, a 12-year-old from Surrey, came top of the pile in the category for those 12 and under. Dmitri Whitmore, 9, finished second despite his youth, and Nicole Ede, 12, from Cambridge finished third.
Joseph Briggs, 16, from Thatcham, Berkshire, claimed the title in the 16 and under category. Ross Johnstone, from Welwyn Garden City, finished just after him, and also competed in the adult competition. Amy Kemp from Maidstone, Kent, came third.
Some 35 children and teens qualified for the event, which was held at the Institute of Education in London on Sunday Sept 17.

To solve a Sudoku puzzle, every digit from 1 to 9 must appear in each of the nine vertical columns, in each of the nine horizontal rows, and in each of the nine boxes. They range in difficulty from easy to very hard, depending on the positioning of the numbers you're given to start with.
