Paul Sexton
Stories and Songs on today's free French CD, with The Times
Why should I buy your record?
The main thing for this album was, I kept saying: “I love Motown, the Sixties
feel. I’m going to bloody do it”.
First record you bought?
It was a Bananarama album. I lived in North London and there was a market
where you could get the cheap ones for about £1. I also had Keith Sweat and
Alexander O’Neal.
Last record you bought?
I got the Rat Pack album for Christmas, which is lovely. It’s a DVD as well.
Best rock’n’roll moment?
When I went to the Q Awards last year I bumped into some great people. Dexys
Midnight Runners’ Kevin Rowland, I nearly fell over. I loved his songs when
I was growing up.
Any tattoos?
Yes, two. One on my hip, low down, and one on the bottom of my back, which
means “grounded”.
What will you do when you grow up?
Be a bit more well-behaved, hopefully.
One big influence?
Musically, Stevie Wonder and Al Green.
Worst cover version of one of your songs?
I heard a few Spice Girls’ covers in Japan, in the lifts or the toilets. Nice
to hear, for the royalties anyway.
Have you ever been in a fist-fight?
No. When I was young I played that game where you have to push each other’s
fingers back, and I lost.
What’s your favourite city?
London. I’m a home bird.
Who do you fancy?
Jude Law and Cameron Diaz.
What are you doing next?
I’m going to Detroit for Top of the Pops to show where Motown started. Then
Brazil to do my next video.
It’s my round, what are you drinking?
I’d like a Bellini, please.
Emma Bunton’s single I’ll Be There is released by
19/Universal on Monday. Her album Free Me follows on Feb 9.
