Fans reacted with fury yesterday to the murder of Lucky Dube, the biggest reggae star in Africa, who was killed in a botched carjacking attempt on the outskirts of Johannesburg.
Caller after caller, many in tears, rang in to early-morning radio shows to express disgust at the killing and vent their anger at a government that is widely perceived to be doing nothing to fight a crimewave that is out of control. Many said that the high-profile murder had taken the shine off the excitement before the Rugby World Cup final against England today in Paris.
Ivor Haarburger, the CEO of Gallo Records, the star’s recording label, said: “We are in shock: not only me but the whole company. He has been with us for over 20 years. It’s a real tragedy, not only to those in South Africa but also Africa and the rest of the world.” Dube was shot dead in front of his two children at about 8.20pm on Thursday soon after he dropped them off at their uncle’s home in the southern Johannesburg suburb of Rosettenville.
Abigail Kubeka, a fellow musician, said: “I don’t know what to say. A humble person like Lucky Dube dying in this way is very alarming. The death of a musician who preached peace and goodwill through his music has devastated me.”
Police said that Dube, 43, was travelling in a grey Chrysler and had just dropped off his son and daughter, aged 15 and 16, when he was attacked. Three carjackers fired at least three bullets into his body but then fled in a blue Volkswagen without stealing his car. Police have set up a special task force to trace a group of three suspected killers who are believed to be well-known local criminals. They said that the car had rolled down the road a few yards and then hit a tree. “He was declared dead on the scene,” Inspector Lorrain Van Immareck said.
The murder came just as the country was witnessing an outpouring of national pride in the Springbok rugby team and hoping for once to attract headlines other than about crime.
The issue of ever-worsening crime has cut across race lines and led to unprecedented criticism of the Government of President Mbeki. Last year one government minister provoked outrage when he said in parliament that “white whingers” should leave the country if they did not like it. It was seen as a turning point because many blacks and Coloureds then added their voice to criticisms of the Government’s failure to live up to promises to bring crime under control.
The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), traditionally a strong ally of the ruling African National Congress (ANC), said that it was appalled and outraged at the murder and added its voice to calls for solutions to crime. For years the Government maintained that crime was not as bad as wealthy people claimed, but recently the statistics, such as 50 murders a day and one rape every 40 seconds, have begun to damage investment and alarm big business.
Mr Mbeki, who is often accused of being in denial on the issue, appealed to South Africans to confront the “scourge of crime” together. “This is indeed very, very sad that this happened to an outstanding South African, an outstanding musician,” he said as he was boarding a flight to today’s match in Paris.
Lucky, words cannot explain the pains i bear in my heart every day i remembered you, you are my every thing, I loved you so much. I started listening to lucky dube 20 years ago, I am your bigest fan and I cry every day that i remembered that you are gone, I imagine what your wife goes through if I can feel this way. My prayers goes out for her.
Lucky may your perfect soul rest in peace and may those who send you to grace suffer for the rest of thier lives, may they not see anything good until the day vulture and the termite will devour their rotten body on earth. Even after they die, thier soul will still be in misery.

Dear lucky,I am so devastated by your death.U dont deserve to die like this.i love your music that i have even saved it on my mobile phones mp3 player and have made one of your songs a ring tone for my phone. It is unbelievable that you are gone!
Lucky was fighting for peace, unity ,reconciliation and even against crime. Is unbelievable that what he fought against through his music is what took his life away.
May the Lord strengthens the entire family and remember we are all going to take the same route to heaven and we are all here for a while, soon or later we will leave this the world.I pray that you experience Gods divine healing and comfort from His loss.
To the believers,Lets unite in prayer and pray against crime especially in South Africa.Lets ask God to give our leaders His divine wisdom to tackle crime. I believe this is a spiritual battle......we do not wrestle against flesh and blood but against principalities, evil forces......
Rest in peace,Lucky!

Death Penality can be the solution to South Africa's crime.
L.G, Gaboronne, Botswana
I cant believe it! What would Dube have done to deserve such a cruel death. Every time he stood on the stage to sing, everybody left whatever she/he was doing to listen to the message of hope. Who is gonna tell us more hope in music then? Dube can you listen from wherever your soul rests to our voices and tears.
For God's sake, what happened to the promised South Africa post apertheid? For many African countries like Uganda, we hoped for a free South Africa. We now see more bondage that we ever imagined. Can SouthAfricans stop and think about it? Can Mbeki stand up as a man to be counted? With all stories of crime, increasing HIV rates and black self hate, where is the hope.
Could this be one of the tricks boers are using to discredit the black government? I am yet to understand, what is the motive behind having insecure neighborhood. Is the reason being unemployed, landless youths having nothing to but live off the kill? What happened to South Africa's Land Reform? Love u Dube

Emeritus Archbishop Desmond Tutu said-
"When we come face to face with ghastly atrocities we are appalled and want to ask: 'But what happened to these people that they have acted in this manner? What happened to their humanity that they should become [so] inhumane?.....Yes we hang our heads in shame as we witness our extraordinary capacity to be vicious, cruel and almost devoid of humanness."
Jerry Simon Malebana, johannesburg, South Africa
Sad but just daily life in Sth Africa. The reason why I and hundreds of thousands of Sth African now live in Australia. Needless to say until the useless SA Government catches a wake up and actuall does something about it we will not be back. We read about the plans to entice us back to help the brain drain issue -what a laugh !!!

What can we say..Nero fiddles while Rome burns... Our Government turns a blind eye, South Africans live in fear, another great soul has left us. What will it take for our impotent Government to rise and and say NO MORE.. This is not about colour, this is not about class...This is about rape, murder, anarchy. We need to unite as a people and stand against this. No to violence, no to hate, no to crime!!

I am a very, very Die hard fan of Sir Lucky Dube the reggae star fo the world.
I was first introduced to listeneing to the so called music by his reggae musics and I even influenced my family members to like his music and we are die fans of his beautiful and inspirational musics.
It was a bad day for me to hear a bad & tragic news of his sudden death,it surprised me that I have to stop listening to his music that day because i listen to his music every day.
You know, he sent a message through the form of music addressing the social problems that we the blacks face in this third world about, orpaned chidren, being neglected, rejected, abused, about racism, law & order issues, poverty, economic issues you name it he spoke all about this.I like him and his music because his life story is similar with mine being brought up by grandma who inspired me. I send my deepest sympathy to Sir Lucky and his surviving family.

Im so saddaned by the death of Lucky and i ask God why? They say everything happens for a reason in this case what was the reason that a humble man like Lucky is brutually murdered in front of his children. Why?Its so sad.Jesus said im leaving you this commandment that you should love one another, but nobody is following it if we did Lucky would have been here today with his family. Some people don't have a heart i wonder what the real reason for this was .I look up the sky tears streaming down my cheeks asking God why. If he had died of illness i would have understood, not with murder that makes it so painfuI.I believe in God and im really trying not cry as someone with no hope.I love Lucky and his musik is an inspiration to me as singer who is just starting to get into the business. His death is not in vain he has even in death inspired me to stand up and take the stage. Will miss him terribly but will always remember him like he said `remember me`,Rastas never die they RIP.Farewell Lucky!

Like Honourable Robert Nesta Marley, who was shot, and Your Majesty Peter McIntosh, who was murdered, Your Excellency Lucky Dube has succumbed to the colonial masters' weapon of choice wielded by another Black brother in his misguided quest for material possession. Africa had lost one of its great hero in the music industry. Lucky Dube was such an inspiration in the lives of millions of people around the globe especially here in the Solomon Islands where he toured 1995. As a result of his successful tour in our happy isles, reggae music had since becoming most porpular and most loved music around the country. Since then, several hundreds of band have formed through the inspiration of the late Lucky Dube. We pray that those who were responsible for his death will soon be brought to justice.
May his soul rest in peace.

The death of a true Worrior of Music is a total shock. I come form Samoa where Lucky Dube himself has never been to. I love his Music. They teach and reveal everyday situations about love and peace.
How can these people do such thing to such a well known person like Lucky Dube himself? I wouldn't do that ! How can these people kill someone that everyone needs and cling to?
I've never seen this man in person but listening to his Music and seeing his Shows on TV brings me closer to him like any other person like a real brother.
I know the Music world would definitely miss him like I do too. He's done so much and have toched many many lives and changed many people with his music. He sings of love and nothing else.
I would like to send my sympathy to the late Lucky Dube and his lovely kids and wife.
RIP brother.
Thanks and Regards,

Lucky Dube was in Nigeria twice. But I never had the opportunity of seeing him. I have never loved a human being the way I loved him even though I have only met him through the his messages deleivered through his music. He is genrally regarded as a Prophet here. His killing is devastitating. How could they have killed a man whose message was peace? How could they have killed the greatest Ambassador South Africa ever produced? May his peaceful sould find eternal rest in immortality. May the earth not hide the blood that was shed on it.

With billions of tax payers hard earned Rands being spent on defence, I believe it is time the government followed the example of some western countries like France and the UK, and start using our army much more to defend the citizens of South Africa. Thousands of soldiers around the country are paid a regular salary, and with no wars besides the war of crime raging on our own streets, I for one would love to see the defence forces used in conjunction with the SAPS to bolster the numbers of security forces, and help wipe out the scourge of crime that is plaguing our nation. If we start this early enough, I am sure by 2010, we will have a much safer nation for all to enjoy!

I think its high time for Present Mbeki to act upon this crime reputation which has reached its peak in South Africa. As the next World Cup (2010) is going to be held in South Africa, Present Mbeki, the world need your attention now. l think you have to garantee the entire world about his security. otherwise this World Cup opportunity is going to slip away from your hands easily.

It is with great shock that a man of Dube's stature should die in such a senseless crime. A man who talked of living in peace and unity as well as coming together as one. This artiste came to prominence in Jamaica because of Irie FM. He had a sound many thought at first to be that of Peter Tosh who ironically was also shot to death in Jamaica 20 years ago. It was very saddened to hear the death of this wonderful peace loving musician. His songs of love, unity and peace enspires me so much. It helps me motivated and redirected me from some of my unethical unhuman attributes and nature into the right direction. I really missed you. However, thank you so much for your message. lt will remain as your natural heritage and legacy with us. You will be always remembered in my life time as one of the most favourite, edifying and inspirational musician.
I wish if you could come back to the Solomon Islands again to preach your meassage of peace, love, hope and unity through your unique reggae music..
My heart and prayers are with your family and relatives. May our almighty God comfort them in this
time of sorrow and sadness.
May your soul rest in peace with the Lord.

Perhaps President Mbeki will act now to cut crime, but most doubt it. He has lost the plot! He has an ineffective Chief Commissioner of police, Jackie Selebi, who has been in the position for 6 years now and who has just had a warrant for his arrest sworn out for alleged association with criminals involved in corruption and murder. What does Mbeki do, he sacked the SA Chief Prosecutor to protect Selebi who is also the President of Interpol. The world has gone mad and meanwhile people are dying every day in SA, victims of crime, and according to the SA Medical Council, the average is about 80. That is nearly 30.000 a year. With some criminals armed with AK47s, even soccer hooligans do not stand a chance.

Lucky we will miss you, I'm sorry that your children had to see you die this way. I'm sorry for the 31 other people who were murdered the same day, I'm sorry for the 32 people that will die today, I'm sorry for the 32 people that will die tomorrow. By the time the soccer world cup in 2010 kicks off an estimated 31,000 of my countrymen will have been murdered.

What a loss to his family, South Africa and the Music world. He was such an inspiration. When are the top dogs going to wake up and see whats happening to beautiful South Africa.

Oh, what a way for a man who preached nothing but peace and love for thy neighbour to die! I wonder if his murderers realise the impact of thier actions. They have left not only his immediate family, but the whole world in tears. Dear God, if these people are human at all, how are they feeling wherever they are? This is beyond my understanding. I think South Africa needs a prayer to deal with the crime situation, especially at a time when the world is watching them so closely as they prepare to host the 2010 FIFA world cup! May his soul rest in eternal peace!

Totally something needs to be done, crime rate in SA is deploring to unprecedented levels. This does not need concerted efforts from society but the powers that be.The only thing to do is to ban the possession of firearm by individuals.Blinkered thinking will leave us with nothing----even the president himself will come face to face with some thing like this because these poeple without sense of conscience and humanity are riding the communities freely.
Anywhere by day end the bible says nobody can take way soul out an human being besides the ALMIGHTY nice journey bra we will emulate your foot steps

I pray to God that he gives the children courage to continue with life. i know how traumatic this can be.
but why do u think he was killed?
1. Crime atributed to carjacking but, car was not stolen.
2. There was no account of confrontation, a key evidence for carjacking.
3. Perpetrators waited for children to get out of car.
4. He has feared for his life over political reasons

I am so sad that I so much fail to describe it. How do you murder such a humble person. Even a deaf person could hear Lucky's inspirational songs. I learnt a lot from this man of God,that always put your feet on earth. I wonder if people who do this understand what they do to us. Lucky Dube was a father to me. The peace that is so much in me is what he taught me through his music. The pain I'm in will take a very long time to heal. Rest in peace son of the soil.
Christopher Tebogo Kadiwa, Mahalapye, Botswana
This is an outrageous tragedy that is very hard to cope with, especially his two children. But i pray that God will give you the courage and comfort to pass through this undeserved period of your lives.
A hero will always remain a hero. Lucky, your teachings and goodwill will never fade in my memory. You will continue to be a hero wherever you are. With tears.

It is very outrageous to hear such a bad news, Lucky Dube is the only preacher who can heal our soul. Now that they murdered him, the World is left in to a big trauma. I personally considered him to be alive "If a raggae man dies, they don't rot" I will always remember him as my hero.May his soul R.I.P.

Lucky touches thousands in the world through his meaningful songs. He is a hero and a true legend. His song "respect me" speak for itself. I was in great shock to hear the great legend of reggae Lucky Dube died in this way. I can't believe why such a great musician through his songs preaching unity, peace and love has to die this way. How nonsense the killing was. I can only say that the government has not done enough in fighting crime in South Africa and perhpas South Africa is no longer a safe place to live.
I was 13 when Lucky Dude came to the Solomon Islands to perform and was very excited to see him and even to shake hand with him for the first time.
I was hoping to see him again but now my hope is gone and I don't know if there will be again another reggae legend humble enough like Lucky Dube to come and perform in such a tiny nation.
Lucky Dube's death has left South Africa and the rest of the world with clear message also that could change this world for better.
Lucky Dube is gone forever but his words will live forever.
May his soul rest in peace.

Its so sad that somebody in his right frame of mind could raise a hand to kill an innocent and peaceful man , a mucisian of world repute. I am sure God will never let the culprits rest untill they face justice. The whole world mourns the cold murder of this peace-loving mucian. May Dube's soul rest in perfect peace.

This is a chock to me and i know to the entire world. I remember listening to this is man when I was just a little boy back at my hometown in Africa. My family listens to this man a lot mostly my big brother. Lucky Dube was the stongest connection that me and my brother kept. For anyone to this to a man like that and infront of his kids, it's devastating. R.I.P Lucky Dube and to the family, sorry for your lost. I feel like i know him as a close friend. ONE LOVE and we WILL Remember You.

I am truely heartbroken with this unbelievable incident. What animals could just shoot a defenseless man... infront of his children?!!! Not only is this digusting, but extremely inhumane! As a proud African, I am shocked to the core.
Not to point any fingures, but it's high time that South Africa gave the indeginious people a fair platform to curb the poverty level amongst the people. South SAfrica only became 'independent' on paper, but NOT in actuality and the black people are still slaves on thier own land. Mbeki must ensure better division of wealth in that beautiful country and better education, otherwise the crime issue will persist. Those young men and women of Soweto were hardend during apathied, but nothing has really changed in thier favour 13 years later.
Rest in peace to the great rasta!!
Tariro, Los Angeles, USA
it's sad very sad, these crime rate is alarming , the effect of un managed population growth is a big problem, criminal will always be around but crime committed due to poverty is an avoidable disaster.
He is a talent and there are very few of them around ,taking him out has effect worldwide on his fan , friends and family.
I pray that we get to a point when crime are less induced by poverty. We will miss him.

I was just overcome with a wave of shock and sadness. I was very young when I first heard Lucky Dube about 12 years ago. About 5 years ago, i was in the middle of battling drug addiction and when I was at my lowest , I remember his music filling me with peace and hope. Only in this cruel world could someone so positive lose his life to such negativity. Tears are shed and prayers are said.
Heartbroken, Ohio, USA
I think of the foolishness of the two men who did this - was it just a lark, did they choose to shoot simply because they could? When guns are available, stupid people will take them to do stupid things. Shameful, sad, unbelievable. So many people are shot just because the person could - and no other better reason but that.
Gun control. Good idea.

I had the pleasure of seeing Lucky Dube at the Vermont Reggae Festival about 10 years ago. It was one of the best shows I have ever heard. I cannot believe people would do something like this. To the idiots who did this - how low can you go killing this great person in front of his kids?
Linda Cooper, Newburyport, Ma
This is last news l wanted to hear especially coming out South Africa. Despite all the troubles that Zimbabwe is going through our people dont stoop this low. SA must wake up, this is not Yankee state in Africa. What is rubgy team going to react upon hearing the death of an African Icon, what about the world cup 2010 finals, is the world going to allow they nations go where they will be butchered! please someone out there should be responsible. Let us weed out this mess or else SA will be back to old days........ if ever it was out of it.

Our government owes us the freedom which we were fighting for all these years but haven't seen yet. SA is like a river, anything flows in, there's a lot of foreigners who are there doing nothing but increasing crime and then it all comes back to the South Africans as if they were the ones doing that. South Africans love their country and it sounds unbeleivable that a true South African will see someone like Lucky Dube and still pull the trigger, that's unlike South Africans. I know we do some things sometimes to survive but we don't go that far. This scares me. If they kill an ambassador then does that mean that if Nelson Mandela was walking on the street something like this will happen to him too?? Is that being safe and free?? I've been away from home for 5 yrs now and I haven't gone back to visit because I've been robbed with a gun pointed to my head and the people who robbed me were not South Africans although they were speaking Zulu.
Nhlanhla, Sydney, Australia
Men this is disgusting how could they shoot him infront of his kids.God forgive them all.KC from Nigeria
KC, LAGOS, NIGERIA
I'm a proud black South African but I feel like I'm in exile right now due to the crime taking place in SA. Someone may think I don't go back home because I don't like SA or something but the truth is that I lost my parents a while ago and there was a decision I had to take when I got robbed: to be murdered OR a murderer, BUT I decided to flee SA and it paid off. I've accomplished so many things that otherwise I wouldn't have if I was still there.
Our worse enemy in SA is drugs. You find drugs everywhere. A black man standing on the corner selling drugs to a black kid!! The kid takes the drugs and tomorrow he's got no money to afford buying more drugs. What will happen next? That kid will have to kill someone to get R20-30. Why? Because that's what he knows and that's what he has learnt.
For our sake as South Africans who have been fighting for so long, the government should get rid of people who are there selling drugs to live their luxury lives.
Nhlanhla, Sydney, Australia
We like our African brothers, that's why we urged our government to allow them to come in the country and support each other to build a new SA which doesn't exist. This is NOT a new SA, instead, a worse SA. I would urge our government to get rid of foreigners and leave those who respect SA and its values because there is nothing that they brought to SA to show that they want to be part of the society. What they did instead is to bring drugs, human trafficking, prostitution and on the other side government is giving guns to everyone without any strong laws in place. In SA anyone can have a gun. It shouldn't be that easy. I know from experience. My friends have guns and I still ask them today what are the guns for because the time when we needed guns to fight the previous government they didn't buy them and now, when it's time for freedom, they see the freedom to buy guns without reason. Thabo Mbeki, you sold out our souls and our country to the needy and greedy!! SHAME ON YOU!!
Nhlanhla, Sydney, Australia
This is indeed a shame. And to think this is a country that is hosting the the next fifa world cup. It's ridiculous to think the South African government gespite all its resources has failed to control the level of crime. REST IN PEACE, LUCKY. YOU ARE THE GREATEST. WE'LL ALWAYS LOVE YOU.
Devoted, Houston, TX, USA
Rest in peace, Lucky. To South Africa, all I have to say is SHAME.

I am deeply affected by Lucky Dube's murder. Although I've seen him live only once and haven't kept up with his latest work, I always perceived him to be a committed musician with a strong social conscience. Today, not only I grieve for this young, purposeful artist, but I have become aware of how severe South Africa's problems are. Very sad, indeed.
